45 TV Shows You Need To Catch This Fall

45 TV Shows You Need To Catch This Fall 1 of 46

Click to skip The Strain

When? August 28th at 10pm on FX

Why? Because three seasons in and The Strain still remains a juicy, pulpy, often delectable piece of summer programming.

You're The Worst

When? August 31st at 10pm on Fxx

Why? Anticipating where creator/writer Stephen Falk will pick up after last year’s epically poignant and romantic cliffhanger has made 2016 slow to a crawl, so here’s to hoping season 3 keeps You’re the Worst on the creative and bravely cutting upswing it's been on since the pilot.

Narcos

When? September 2nd on Netflix

Why? Narcos took everyone by storm last year and proved to be one of the streaming service's biggest hits. With season 2 set to place a larger focus on Pablo, we're giddy with anticipation to see where it can go from here.

Atlanta

When? September 6th at 10pm on FX

Captain Marvel's Director Search Has Been Narrowed Down To These Three

24 August 2016 4:02 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Lesli Link Glatter, Niki Caro, Lorene Scafaria

A few weeks back, it was confirmed that Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson was cast as Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel in the upcoming Marvel film...Captain Marvel. The film is still a solid three years away, so the studio has plenty of time between now and then, but the character is likely to show up in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, a good year or so before her own standalone film.

As such, it makes sense that Marvel Studios would be hard at work looking for someone to helm Captain Marvel. Given that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler had a hand in the introduction of the character in Captain America: Civil War so that the character would have consistency between films, it's a no-brainer that Marvel would want to do the same thing with Captain Marvel.

So who's up to direct Marvel's first female-led solo film? »

Here’s 3 women up for ‘Captain Marvel’s’ director chair

24 August 2016 2:55 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

We now know Brie Larson is playing Carol Danvers in Marvel Entertainment's Captain Marvel film but the studio has yet to decide on a director. Today there's more news on that front with three women apparently being considered. The last time we spoke of possible Captain Marvel directors there were three names in the mix. There's three again this time, but only one is the same. Last time it was New Zealand director Niki Caro (Whale Rider), Australian Jennifer Kent (The Babadook), and American Emily Carmichael (who recently joined Lumberjanes) being discussed. This time, The Hollywood Reporter says Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria are on the shortlist. I had originally thought Marvel might announce both director and lead actor at Comic-Con last month. Only one of those got announced, but THR writes, "A decision won't be made anytime soon as Marvel is being very deliberate in its search, »

When Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” film premiered this past April on HBO, many critics were quick to cite numerous influences on the stylized work. One of the most cited influences was Julie Dash’s 1991 seminal film “Daughters of the Dust,” about the lives of a family on a small island near South Carolina at the turn of the century, which was the first American feature directed by an African American woman ever to receive a theatrical release. Now, the film has received a 25th anniversary 2K restoration that will open theatrically this November. Watch a trailer for the film and check out the new poster below.

Madison Avenue Counts on Football, ‘Empire,’ ‘Big Bang’ To Lead New TV Season

18 August 2016 12:33 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Madison Avenue is counting on football, football and football to blast its promotional messages to couch potatoes in the coming TV season, and hoping a little music will also help spur consumers to pay more attention to TV commercials.

A Variety survey of commercial-ratings projections for the 2016-2017 broadcast-network TV season finds that advertisers believe NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” NBC’s and CBS’ package of Thursday-night NFL match-ups and the third season of Fox’s music-industry soap-opera “Empire” will lure the most viewers that advertisers covet the most: people between the ages of 18 and 49 who watch commercials rather than using technology to zap past them. The ratings predictions are culled by using estimates from three of the nation’s top media-buying agencies, which negotiate prices for and placement of billions of dollars in TV commercials each year.

The general public continues to place emphasis on the program ratings that Nielsen delivers day in and day out »

Ask Alan: What TV crossovers work, and why?

12 August 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Happy Friday, everybody! Ask Alan is on a sporadic schedule at the moment thanks to press tour and some other summer business, but I happened to be at HitFix's La offices earlier this week, which meant I was able to film a segment hitting on three recent questions, including Emmy categories I'd like to add(*), long TV title sequences I always watch even when binging, and my hopes for the Brooklyn 99/New Girl crossover. (*) As often happens after I'm about to publish one of these videos, an additional answer occurred to me: some kind of dramedy category or categories. On the one hand, it would solve the problem of shows like Transparent or Orange Is the New Black having to compete with shows that are more comedic or dramatic than they are, respectively. On the other, it feels like it would be impossible to draw absolute lines between drama, comedy, »
