Stream this in the summer: 'United States of Tara'

21 July 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In my early days on the beat, NBC had an ad campaign encouraging people to watch summer reruns, promising, "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you!" In the age of Peak TV, that slogan seems less cynical than accurate. The rise of streaming services has put the bulk of TV history only a click or two away, which means that people are constantly discovering The Wire, or Arrested Development, or Terriers (sigh) for the very first time. In lieu of a summer rewind this year, I wanted to offer up primers of shows you can stream, whether an older series available in full(*) or something current you can catch up on before its next season begins. So far, I've done a pair of current shows in  Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Halt and Catch Fire, and wanted to shift gears this week to do a completed series. (*) Note: with these picks, »

Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis make a break for safety in the final set photos for Universal’s reboot of The Mummy, now that principal photography has officially wrapped.

Cruise and the Peaky Blinders actress were spotted filming last-minute scenes on the streets of London, running square in front of a giant fan. Is it possible that Sofia Boutella’s ancient deity will be whipping up a literal storm in the English capital? Time will tell.

What we do know, however, is a general overview of the story fuelling Alex Kurtzman’s long-awaited franchise overhaul, as the filmmaker looks to unlock Universal’s world of gods and monsters.

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, »

The Mummy Reboot Set Photos Have Tom Cruise Running for His Life

17 July 2016 2:10 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last week, fans got their first look at The Mummy star Sofia Boutella with set photos as production continues. Filming has been under way since late April, when we got our first look at Tom Cruise and his co-star Annabelle Wallis. As production continues, we have even more photos of Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis who are seen springing into action.

The photos surfaced on various Twitter pages, featuring Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis going on the run from unseen enemies. There is very little we know about the scene itself, except both actors are seen running from someone, or something. It's certainly possible that both stars were running from Sofia Boutella's title character, but we don't know for certain.

Mummy Reboot Set Photos Reveal Sofia Boutella's Queen

10 July 2016 2:42 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Production has been under way on Universal's The Mummy since April, but there is still much we don't know about this upcoming adventure. Tom Cruise is set to star, although little is known about his character, with Kingsman: The Secret Service breakout star Sofia Boutella playing the title character, marking the first time in franchise history a female has played The Mummy. Today we have the first photos from the set with Sofia Boutella in action.

The photos surfaced on various Twitter pages, giving us our first look at Sofia Boutella's costume as the title character, which come just a few months after our first look at Tom Cruise on the set. Unfortunately, we don't get a glimpse at any of the actress' co-stars, and it isn't exactly clear what is happening in this scene. One thing is for certain, though, her costume is certainly unique.

The project was believed to be set for release on March 16, 2018, but MGM and Warner Bros. recently slotted their Tomb Raider reboot on this date, and an official date for The Flash has yet to be set. Ezra Miller has long been attached as the title character, making his Dceu debut in this spring's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but no other cast members have been announced. Today we have word that three contenders have emerged for the female lead, which is most likely Iris West, Kiersey Clemons, Rita Ora and Lucy Boynton.

Variety reports that Kiersey Clemons, who starred in director Rick Famuyiwa's 2015 film Dope, has emerged as the front runner. However, The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit teases that Rita Ora and Lucy Boynton are also "in »

Dope Actress Kiersey Clemons Eyes Female Lead In Rick Famuyiwa’s The Flash

8 July 2016 11:56 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The Powers That Be over at Warner Bros. could be teeing up a possible Dope reunion.

That’s according to Variety, revealing today that up-and-comer Kiersey Clemons is circling the coveted female lead in Rick Famuyiwa’s The Flash. Details remain scarce for now, but all signs point to Clemons assuming the role of Iris West, journalist cohort and potential love interest to Barry Allen. Currently portrayed by Candice Patton in The CW’s live-action series, it’s worth remembering that both movie and show will take place in two entirely different worlds.

When it comes to Clemons, viewers first clocked eyes on the 22-year-old in Famuyiwa’s Sundance darling Dope. She would then go on to appear in a handful of New Girl episodes and comedy sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. The meteoric rise doesn’t stop there, though; the actress has also secured a place in Sony’s redo of cult sci-fi Flatliners, »

Review: ‘The Mindy Project’ Season 4 Fulfills Every Binge Viewer’s Dream

5 July 2016 4:30 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

The Mindy Project” Season 4 is over. No, really. It just ended; not last December, when it took a midseason break; not in May, when broadcast sitcoms all wrapped up. The finale, “Homewrecker,” debuted Tuesday, July 5 on Hulu, and… it’s pretty good! We’ll dig into the epic fantasy creator Mindy Kaling has materialized for her character shortly, but that’s not actually why her Fox-turned-Hulu series is an accomplishment like no other in 2016.

In an era when we’re lucky to get 13 episodes of an original series from any network, streaming or otherwise, “The Mindy Project” delivered more content than even the immensely high standards of broadcast television. Twenty-six half-hours of TV is an incredible number to knock out in less than a year (“New Girl,” “Mindy’s” old partner on Fox, made 22), and it’s set the series up to be the ultimate binge for any TV fan. »

‘How I Sold My Web Series to Netflix’: The Director of ‘EastSiders’ Explains His Secret

1 July 2016 11:36 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

On July 1, my independently produced Lgbt series “EastSiders” made its debut on Netflix. This is the first time in the series’ four-year history that it has been made available internationally, with subtitles in more than a dozen languages. It’s been a long road from YouTube to Netflix, and looking back there were several key decisions we made that helped our show compete in an increasingly crowded space.

I wish I could say that I predicted this, that it was all part of some master plan, but the truth is I had no idea a series could have as many lives as “EastSiders” has had. My goals when I created the show were simple; I wanted to write, direct and star in a project and see it through to completion, because I had been involved in so many micro budget projects that never saw the light of day.
