Not the worst
neverenoughgold9 March 2022
But not the best. Been one of our favorite shows since Jag and we enjoyed the series evolution over the years. That being said, it brings to mind when 30 years ago we decided to host a foreign exchange student from Spain. When we picked her up at the airport it was exciting and after bringing her home and getting her to become part of our family was enjoyable. However, after 10 months with all the trials and tribulations it was time for it to end. Yes there were tears when she boarded the jet to New York where she would depart to Spain, but there was also relief our family was back to normal.

I think NCIS is at the stage where it might be time to depart. DiNozzo gone, Abby gone, Ziva sort of gone, and pf course Gibbs gone. Maybe the time is near for NCIS to be gone?

Suspend disbelief for an hour

Oh brother - after the excellent "Helpers" last episode, we have this - dross!

This doesn't gel properly on SO many levels. I realise that characters need to be introduce (thank heavens, in this case probably "for one episode only") but the cardboard-cutout bad guy was clearly "phoning it in".

So many points where the audience simply have to stick fingers in ears and sing "la-la-la"!

Positives - it is great to know that Kayla has finished FLETCC. It is great to know that Leon Vance is a caring and loving father. It is great to see that (post-action) he can have an uncomfortable conversation with his daughter.

Beyond that... "NEXT!"

First Steps

I feel like they randomly bring in family members just for episodes like this. I'd rather we also see them in less dramatic moments as that would make episodes like this stand out more.

Main cast
nananow8 March 2022
It seems the main cast, one by one are on a hit list to showcase their most unprofessional and ridiculous behavior. Tonight was the director's turn. Insisting on treating his daughter as an infant, threatening the staff with her safety, calling her his baby to anyone that will listen is so far out of character they might as well have used another actor. Painful to watch. Torres continues his foul attitude and disrespect for others. Everyone pampered and pandered to Kayla who showed her teenage self in an adult and dangerous job. The little she did was praised as a magnificent effort. Thank goodness this arc won't be continuing. Could we get back on track with solving complex cases and move away from the cheese and babble.

Unwatchable

If you watch any of the original season 1 you'll see that Timothy McGee was given nothing but grunt work and that he was mainly just carrying things around while he was training this person said that that's what they wanted to be treated normal but then broke the rules multiple times.

Woof...

I seriously think this was the worst episode of NCIS I've ever seen. I've seen all 430+, so I might be forgetting a few dogs over the years. But wow! Might be time to put the old girl out of her misery.

How ridiculous....
linda-dixon131311 March 2022
Worst NCIS episode I've seen. None of this would have happened - she broke protocol at every turn. So much for being really intelligent. Stupid premise - lazy writing. If she's going to be a regular I will avoid those episodes.

Loss of reality

Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert.

The Directors daughter working in the same field office!? Gary Cole bringing pastries for the squad. What happened to a great show with a dynamic cast. The whole thing is mush.

Sad.

Cancellation looming

Another poor poor episode on the back of the last one. Be surprised if this gets another season, but then again the viewing public may just be dim enough to keep watching out of habit. I'm done.

Weak Effort
vintagegeek10 March 2022
Weak episode. Just another kidnapping episode where the budget is cut to the bone. No investigation, no technolog. Again, a stupid soap opera episode. Procedures never followed, medical information was inaccurate. Miracle GPS in last 5 minutes. Tada saved the day. Truly awful. Cancel it. It's become miserable story lines.

continued freefall

I love NCIS, or at least I used to. IMO the show has continued to decline since about season 8 or so. This episode? Poor, lazy, and contrived writing. The whole "kidnapping" sub-plot was just so poorly done. The actors did they best they could with it all, but it wasn't enough to save a poor script.

Trite and boring
lindabellcrandall22 June 2023
Where have all the good writers and scripts have gone? These episodes have started going down hill ever since the stupid way they wrote off Bishop. This one is at the top. NO way would Vance's daughter would be placed where her father would have say over her training. Just wouldn't be done. Some of my friends told me that this show is more like a soap opera, sorry but a soap is more realistic. It is getting to be an insult to long time fans of the show. I used to make sure I had my time cleared to watch every week, now not so much. And bye the buy, Macho Man Torres is getting old, you can only see some one flex his shoulders so often. Won't be surprised if it is soon cancelled.

Not good indeed
harrykivi27 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Yasemin Yilmaz, the writer of this episode, cowrote "Docked", which is currently my favorite episode of the 19th season. Sadly, "First Steps" was not good. Not as bad as "Peacekeeper", but still quite terrible. Stop doing episodes, which contain done to death ideas in this series.

Let's start with the good.

. The production values of the episode are great. "First Steps" is rather well-directed, the music fits the scenery. The acting's fine for the most part. Rocky Carroll gives a very good performance.

. There are relatable themes (like an overprotective father) touched upon and the jokes are fine.

But...

. The story is agreed a very basic hostage negotiation narrative, which is pretty boring actually. There isn't a single surprise in this entire story. The dialogue is not always spot on and can come off wooden.

Overall, not good.

3/10 HK.
