‘Catching Fire’ Lifts Lionsgate Quarterly Earnings Above Forecasts

6 February 2014 1:14 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Citing a strong performance by “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” Lionsgate has reported earnings of $88.8 million, or 64 cents a share — well above Wall Street forecasts of 44 cents — for its third quarter ended Dec. 31.

The third-quarter earnings more than doubled the year-ago profits of $37.8 million, or 27 cents a share.  Revenues jumped 13% to $839.9 million, driven by strong domestic and international box office performance of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” along with international contributions from “Now You See Me.”

Worldwide box office for “Catching Fire” is more than 25% above “The Hunger Games.” The sequel, starring Jennifer Lawrence at Katniss Everdeen, took in $421 million domestically — making it the top title released in 2013 — and another $438 million overseas.

“Our stellar results in the quarter were attributable to our operating performance, the favorable environment for content and the benefits from our strong balance sheet,” said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer. “We will continue to invest in »

Helen Mirren Twerks as She Receives Hasty Pudding Award

30 January 2014 4:30 PM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Helen Mirren headed to the hallowed halls of Harvard University on Thursday to receive the 2014 Hasty Pudding Award from the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the university's prominent theater troop, and she really got into the spirit of the occasion. The Oscar-winner was paraded around the streets of Cambridge, Mass., in a convertible alongside Hasty Pudding members dressed in drag, but there was one thing she probably didn't to be asked to do: Twerk. The actress, 68, said she had "tried in my bedroom. It was absolutely humiliating." But Mirren was a good sport, and had no problem bending over and shaking her »

Bruce Willis Reunites with M. Night Shyamalan for Labor of Love

29 January 2014 4:03 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Bruce Willis is reuniting with The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable director M. Night Shyamalan for a new drama entitled Labor of Love.

The project is actually one of the first scripts M. Night Shyamalan ever sold, with 20th Century Fox buying the screenplay in 1993. However, the project never got off the ground since the writer insisted on directing, and the studio wouldn't let an untested filmmaker take the helm. The script re-surfaced several years ago when Denzel Washington was eyeing the project, but it never materialized until now. Emmett/Furla/Oasis will provide the financing, with Im Global selling the film at the European Film Market in Berlin. 20th Century Fox still owns the screenplay, although deals are currently being worked out and should be finalized next month.

The story follows a Philadelphia book store owner (Bruce Willis) whose life is shattered when the love of his life dies in a tragic accident. »

Bruce Willis to Star in Angry Android Movie ‘Vice’

21 January 2014 4:18 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Bruce Willis has made a few excursions outside of his favorite genre for the sake of some worthy scripts (and some unworthy ones: see North), but generally speaking he’s an action man through and through.

Just in the past couple of years, Willis has played tough guy roles in The Expendables 2, Looper, Red 2 and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and this year he’ll reprise his role as John Hartigan in Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s comic book sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

No one can deny that Willis has stamina, and Deadline reports that he’s lined up for yet another action movie, this time a futuristic sci-fi called Vice. The movie ...

Does John Malkovich Have a Better Bald Head than Vin Diesel? Cast Your Vote for the Best Baldie Reelzie Award

17 January 2014 8:02 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It's true that a gorgeous flowing mane looks great on a guy, but no hair looks awfully good, too. In honor of the gentlemen who wore a bald head proudly on the silver screen, we're giving a Reelzie Award for Best Baldie.

John Malkovich is an extraordinary actor, and he proudly displayed his bald head in Red 2. Vin Diesel is always both a badass and a baldie, so it's no surprise that he's on the list. This year he brought his perfectly shaped, hairless head to both Fast & Furious 6 and Riddick, but we think Fast 6 showed off his bald a little bit better. We're not sure Bruce Willis ever had a full head of hair, but that's ok, because he totally doesn't need it. He yippee ki-yay'd his way through another Die Hard sequel looking as good as ever. American Hustle has definitely been an awards-season darling, and the Reelzies are no different. »

No Escape For Houdini As Sony Brings In Max Landis For Re-Writing Duties

14 January 2014 9:48 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Chronicle scribe Max Landis has been ushered in to perform re-writes on Houdini – Sony’s planned cinematic offering, amid a sudden glut of projects about this magical man who has long fascinated filmmakers.

The infamous escapologist and illusionist appeared in several movies himself between 1906 and 1923, and has since been portrayed by many other actors – including Tony Curtis, Wil Wheaton, Harvey Keitel and Guy Pearce. Now, 88 years after his death, the world of entertainment is bracing itself for a veritable cavalcade of Houdini projects – each offering a unique angle on this dedicated showman.

While the History Channel are planning a biopic mini-series that will see Academy Award winner Adrien Brody as Houdini, Dean Parisot – who previously directed Galaxy Quest and Red 2 – is slated to helm an action adventure film featuring Houdini as the central heroic character. That film will shoot from a Noah Oppenheim (The Maze Runner) script for Summit Entertainment. »

‘Chronicle’ Screenwriter Max Landis Rewriting ‘Houdini’ for Sony

13 January 2014 5:43 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

There have been a number of movies based on the intriguing life of illusionist, magician and escapologist Harry Houdini, who has been portrayed on screen by a long list of actors including Tony Curtis and Guy Pearce. Around 100 years ago Houdini was at the height of his popularity, and now he’s making a comeback (of sorts) in Sony Pictures’ upcoming movie Houdini.

To clear up any confusions, this Houdini has nothing to do with the History Channel miniseries being planned, with Adrien Brody set to star in the lead role. It is also a separate endeavor from Summit Entertainment’s Houdini, scripted by Noah Oppenheim (The Maze Runner) with Dean Parisot (Red 2) ...

Bruce Willis Eyeing Kidnapping Thriller Captive

9 January 2014 8:49 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Despite playing the same role over and over, and over and over again, there’s no denying that Bruce Willis is good at what he does. Sure, he doesn’t always pick the best projects (A Good Day To Die Hard, Red 2), but no matter where he shows up, you can usally count on the fact that he’ll be entertaining to watch. So, it’s no surprise the the actor is now circling another action thriller. Titled Captive, the film has Simon Brand set to direct and will revolve around a kidnapping plot.

Originally, Arnold Schwarzenegger was eyeing the lead role but that was a couple years ago and never came to fruition. Now, Willis is in talks and he’s expected to join. As I mentioned before, it’s a kidnapping plot which sees an “American real estate magnate living in Brazil who is kidnapped and held for ransom. »

Bruce Willis to Replace Arnold Schwarzenegger in Indie Thriller ‘Captive’

9 January 2014 8:36 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Old (action star) dogs Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis had a rather uneven year at the box office in 2012; the former two headlined financial duds The Last Stand and Bullet to the Head while Willis sequel Red 2 was a slight under-performer, which gives a legitimate reason to question their continued box office viability. Then again, the new year means another chance for these three to prove they’re still capable of big ticket sales (and/or decent films, in Willis’ case).

Willis has entered negotiations to headline Captive: an independent-funded project that was originally fashioned to serve as a new starring vehicle for Schwarzenegger. However, the latter has passed on the prospect and ...
