Danny Cannon on following Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy with Gotham

6 July 2014 1:51 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Later this year we’ll be heading back to Gotham City for the first time since Christopher Nolan brought the curtain down on The Dark Knight Trilogy with The Dark Knight Rises as Fox launches its Batman prequel series Gotham. Speaking to IGN, pilot director and executive producer Danny Cannon (Judge Dredd) has spoken about the daunting task of having to follow the acclaimed trilogy.

“It was daunting at first, because you’re following three masterpieces. So I settled with the fact that — what we talked about when we first pitched this was, ’20 years before Batman.’ A world that’s starting to see a corrupt city rotting from the inside. It reminded us of New York in the late ’70s and early ’80s. That was our first meeting, and we kind of spring-boarded off of that. Luckily, that’s uncharted territory. Hopefully in the atmospherics of Gotham we created a romantic, »

Paul Mazursky, Director of ‘Unmarried Woman,’ Dies at 84

1 July 2014 11:55 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Performer-turned-writer/director Paul Mazursky, who was Oscar-nommed five times and helmed hit movies including “Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice” and “An Unmarried Woman,” has died. He was 84. Mazursky died of cardiac arrest Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

While his most significant films as a director came several decades ago, he returned to acting on TV in later years, playing Norm on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and appearing on “The Sopranos” and on ABC drama “Once and Again” as Sela Ward’s father.

Mazursky at his best captured the spirit of the late ’60s and the ’70s, when the American moral climate was turned on its head. His films entertainingly explored such weighty issues as marital fidelity, the merits of psychological therapy and modern divorce: “Bob and Ted,” starring Robert Culp and Natalie Wood as a “liberated” married couple; “Blume in Love,” starring George Segal and Susan Anspach »

Gotham is one of autumn’s most hotly anticipated television pilots. The series will tell the story of Jim Gordon as he makes his way through the police ranks. Being set in the fictional city of Gotham of course means that along the way we will encounter many characters, good and bad from the Batman universe.

Gordon is to be played by The Oc’s Ben McKenzie, with Blade actor Donal Logue onboard as his mentor. The newly orphaned Bruce Wayne is being played by David Mazouz, the boy who brilliantly portrayed the role of mute Jake in Touch alongside Kiefer Sutherland. Wayne will be looked after by everyone’s favourite Dog Soldier Sean Pertwee, with Jada Pinkett-Smith also joining the project as a brand new to the world role.

To help promote the Fox show, a series of posters have gone, see below:

Mr. Freeze to show up in Gotham?

Fox’s Batman prequel series Gotham is shaping up to be quite the exploration of the Caped Crusader’s rogues gallery. What began as a telling of future police commissioner James Gordon’s origin has seemingly morphed into a larger exploration of what turned some of Gotham City’s citizens into the villains we know and love. We already know that Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), Edward Nigma (Cory Michael Smith), and Ivy Pepper (Clare Foley) will be featured, with characters like the Joker and Scarecrow planned to appear at some point in the future.

In a recent interview with HitFix, pilot episode director Danny Cannon revealed that he wants to bring one of Batman’s… cooler villains into the fold as well: the mysterious Dr. Victor Fries, the future pun-spouting criminal with a heart of ice, Mr. Freeze.

After screening the series pilot in New York City, TVLine grabbed a few minutes with onetime Southland lawman Ben McKenzie, who is tasked with bringing Gordon to life on the small screen, about the much-anticipated drama, which also stars »

Positive reactions to Gotham following the pilot sneak preview

A lucky few have seen the pilot for the anticipated pre-Batman TV show Gotham and the reaction has been very, very positive.

Several comments have described the show as “gorgeous” and “brilliantly cast”.

TV Equals’ Sandrine Sahakians said the show is “fantastic… the trailers don’t do it justice… definitely top of my list this fall.”

The only really “negative” comments have come from Hitfix’s Daniel Fienberg who wrote on Twitter, “I can’t shake the feeling there are a lot of unfulfillable promises in Gotham. But… good pilot”. He also added, “it’s well-cast, top to bottom, and the production values play higher in context than they do in the trailer”.

Collider’s Christina Radish also tweeted “Rest assured, Gotham is everything that you want Gotham to be” before giving praise to Robin Lord Taylor’s performance as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin.
