User Reviews

Uninformative, melodramatic, badly written "documentary".
2 December 2014 | by (Earth) – See all my reviews

The creators of this series seem to fancy themselves future Hollywood directors, shooting thrillers and horror flicks and the like, so Infested is made in a melodramatic, suspenseful tone akin to "found-footage" horrors, with jerky visual direction and abrupt sounds that you might see in a mediocre thriller like Stigmata. The entire purpose of making a documentary goes straight out the window. If you want actual information on the pests shown here, on how they live, how they spread, and how to combat them - look elsewhere. Take roaches. Infested will show a family of humans for the first 15 minutes of the story, giving tedious testimonials of how they moved into an apartment etc., shot in the inappropriate horror-flick style, with ominous tones sounding in the background. Then they'll give a few close-ups of a cockroach, a shot of a roach-covered kitchen floor, and a couple of bits of info you already know. Cockroaches multiply really quickly, didcha know that? I think everybody did. As to what to do to fight/prevent roach infestations - don't count on any advice. The family they described apparently left all their food uncovered in the fridge even as they were in the middle of a massive onslaught of cockroaches (dozens of the critters running across the floor), leaving you to wonder: a) are they complete morons so as not to realize that you should not be leaving sources of food aromas uncovered even in a fridge, given such circumstances; b) why the movie makers didn't think this worth mentioning. Ultimately, the family runs from the apartment, leaving you with the corresponding optimistic message.

Also, each episode covers three pests, but the story will not simply do them in sequence, but jump between them, like a Dan Brown/Jonh Grisham novel. The people who made this obviously failed to realize that this technique is applicable when you are jumping to different places and characters who are part of one central story, but not in a case like Infested, where the stories are completely different and pretty much unrelated, if not for the utterly broad common theme. This undermines the quality of the documentary even further.

2/10.
