Storyline

The show is a mockumentary behind-the-scenes look at the Chelsea Lately show. The show's host and creative leader Chelsea Handler likes to think of her staff, especially the writing staff, as family, albeit a highly dysfunctional family where she is the only bright one amid a bunch of morons. Her writing staff is comprised of stand-up comedians who double as on-air personalities. The two special cases among her staff are her assistant, Chuy Bravo, her "Little Nugget" who basically does nothing around the set but look cute, and the show's chef, her one true family member on set, her brother Roy Handler who she treats equally as bad as her writing staff. Most of the characters, portrayed by their real life selves, are highly exaggerated versions of their real life.

Tragic

I'm also a big fan of Chelsea Handler. I wasn't expecting more Chelsea Lately, but I was expecting something funny. It's really not. There are 8 or more writers plus Chelsea & Chuy writing for Chelsea Lately to write a 2 minute monologue and create (not write jokes, just create) topics for discussion to last for 15 minutes. These people aren't that funny. Their attempts at humor are benign. Racial hyperbole abounds. As Chelsea said in one of the promo's for the show '...it's about people who really have no business being on TV.' Sadly, I agree Chelsea. I've looked forward to this show for months and now I'd almost rather watch the news. Chelsea Handler needs to stick to making fun of celebrities and keep the cameras away from her comedian wannabe's except for the occasional round table appearance. I think many fans were expecting to see more of Chelsea Handler, but she's rarely on camera in After Lately. A big thumbs down from a big fan.
