Introducing 'The Family'
16 September 2011 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

In last week's episode where we saw how Jack became friends with a man called Angelo in 1920s New York; this week the two men are reunited. We learn that Angelo had devoted his whole life to discovering the secret of immortality with out any success; then when he is on his deathbed it is thrust upon him! He is unconscious but his granddaughter tells Jack about three men who were present when he'd been repeatedly killed; three men whose family names appear on no databases. These three, or their descendants, are known as The Family and they have a long reach. While the Torchwood team are with Angelo Rex and Esther's former boss turns up; he is working for them but we don't learn much from him as more CIA officers arrive soon afterwards and take him into custody… it is shortly after this that something surprising happens; Angelo dies… the old fashioned way! Understandably everybody is very keen to learn how he could die while everybody else just goes on living. Away from the Torchwood gang the odious Oswald Danes is preparing for a television interview and his only request to his PA is that he provide him with a prostitute… who goes on to tell him something that he was not meant to know.

The action has calmed down a bit but this was still a good episode as the plot was advanced nicely and we finally get a hint that The Miracle might be due to alien activity. The newly introduced Family remain a mystery but enough has been revealed to make them an interesting adversary. There may be less action but there is still some; this includes a car exploding and a couple of shootings. Fans of Star Trek may be pleased to see 'Deep Space Nine' star Nana Visitor playing Angelo's granddaughter and John De Lancie who played Q in several series appearing as CIA agent Allen Shapiro. The regular cast do a good job although I'm even more impressed by Bill Pullman and Lauren Ambrose who play Danes and his PA Jilly Kitzinger… although that might just be because villains seem to get the best lines.
