A self-aware laffer that indulges in rom-com contrivance up until the point it judo-flips them to its own ends.

As contemporary romantic comedies go, it's by no means an embarrassment, ranging from politely bland at its worst to very nearly inspired at its best. It could have been so much more, though, had its makers been prepared to grapple with the genuinely thorny, surprisingly incisive idea at the movie's center.

A Case of You is perfectly enjoyable as far as indie rom coms go - just not particularly original.
42
The movie is about as generic as modern romantic comedies get.

While this unrelentingly midtempo movie milks Brooklyn for its chic, it manages to denude it of its color.

There's some interesting ideas floating around about identity, manhood, and what it means to connect with someone in an over-connected world, but A Case Of You (named for a Joni Mitchell song that's not actually in the film) never actively explores them. Instead, it delves into generic rom-com and ropey cliché to little comic effect.
30
A Case of You is a disappointing romantic comedy that aspires to social relevance until the third act, when it settles for pat Freudian revelations.

A lot of interesting, funny performers aren't very interesting or funny in director Kat Corio's A Case of You.
25
Kat Coiro's film takes the comedy of discomfort to new levels of cringe-worthiness by presenting.
