The Water Nixie
TheLittleSongbird17 April 2020
Saw 'The Water Nixie', as part of this inconsistent but interesting anime series of animated Brothers Grimm adaptations, through a German dub with English subtitles version. 'The Nixie of the Mill-Pond' was a Brothers Grimm story that was relatively unfamiliar to me before watching, and it really is well worth the read. It is beautiful with a very touching ending, and at times quite dark with the titular character being quite creepy.

It was to my surprise to find out that this version of 'The Nixie of the Mill-Pond', called 'The Water Nixie' in this series, was apparently banned. Watching the episode, although there could be a chance of missing something and not being observant, but to me there was nothing really in the episode to warrant its banning (if true). It is as beautiful as the original story, the ending still being touching and it's one of the darkest episodes of the series. As well as one of the best.

'The Water Nixie' has some ropy moments here and there in the animation, the drawing looking rushed at times.

Also felt that the male lead was a little bland, but namely in comparison to the other characters.

But actually there is very little to criticise. Most of the animation is fine, one of the best-looking of the series. Especially the ethereal but also very creepy character design for the water nixie and the similarly unsettling visuals in the climax, which is in the top 5 darkest of the whole series. The music is suitably haunting when necessary, some of the more atmospheric and dynamic scoring.

Writing is never childish while not being too wordy, the kindly old woman being the best written character. The story is beautifully done and does a great adapting the original story, the ending is poignant and the climax is quite hair-raising. The characters are well done, the wife is affecting without being passive and the water nixie (yes, am talking about her a lot but she does make a very memorable impression here) does give one the creeps. The voice acting suits them well, especially for the old woman and the water nixie.

Summing up, very good and one of the series' best. 8/10
