Mournful but full of bias
firat-yuksel9 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
As I first watched this movie, I thought what a great and impossible love story this is. The soundtracks and the song named "Isyan" meaning "Rebellion" which the leading role player Halil Sezai Paracikoglu sang at last part of the movie, when he admitted that he was losing her, were also heart-stubbing. With all the sadness that the movie has printed on me and feeling deeply that the characters are just as one of us, it has earned a place at the top of my favorite movies. But when I recognized the directors point of view about HIV positive patients, most of the first impact of the movie has swept away. He clearly approaches this patients as morbid creatures to avoid, with incorrect information, leading to emphasize the ideas like "if you have HIV, you can't have any carnal relationships". I still recommend this movie but beware of the ridiculous nonsense about the above-named syndrome.

not bad

Warning: Spoilers
I can say that it was very successful, except for a few logical errors. First of all, how many years has the cure for AIDS been almost found? Why are women dying? Let's say he is dead, they can easily have sex by wearing 4 condoms. If we ignore all these, it makes you watch comfortably. It doesn't promise you anything incredibly different, but I don't think you will regret it after the movie is finished. I hope the director's quality work continues. There are many empty Turkish movies nowadays, but our audience does not approach a movie with a prejudice because it is a Turkish production. It is not an acceptable thing. There are also very nice and appropriate movies shot in the meantime. Fig Jam has a story that has been used many times before, but it has played around with the characters and details a little. It has no glaring problems, in my opinion, our cinema definitely needs movies like this.

I enjoyed watching it
g-aliyeva114 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I did enjoy watching this movie. Behind the plot one can see the helplessness of love, condemnation of society, human's behaviour governed by emotions, and that it gets really late when people realise their mistakes. Very genuine, simple and nice. What I like that the author didn't aim to "teach" people a morale, but just told the real story leaving the rest to the viewer.

Having said this, I liked several scenes in the movie like an attempt to show life styles and expectations of other characters looking for true feelings, although I think the author could have thought of more interesting way to express the idea of unexpected love.

A gruesome love story
olcayozfirat31 January 2023
Turkish romantic drama film released in 2011. We can't do comedy, we're really a disaster in the horror business, we have nothing to do with science fiction anyway. But did you say drama, we're really good at that.

When it comes to the movie, when I saw the characters, I said I can't get enough of them. But it misled me. The romance between a girl with AIDS and an unsuccessful screenwriter is told. If you remove the drinking scenes, the movie is half an hour. There are a lot of illogical scenes. But in the end, she manages to shed two drops of tears from her eyes. That's why I found it successful. The foreign version of the movie is the 1970 movie (see: Love Story) that made us life a prison for a while.

There is a bit of sexuality and nudity in the movie.

With all goods and bads
onur_xkhan8 April 2012
After I have read the reviews above I have to say that first I didn't find the film sexist and I don't believe that the director supports the behavior of the leading male actor. I prefer to see it like there are men who behave like Metin, and the director chosen to make a movie which includes one of those men. I can criticize acting also, some scenes are really over theatrical (the doorman and the shoes for instance or sidekick of Metin character and even in some scenes including Metin ( Sezai Paraciklioglu) ). But I really like to see characters who drink beer and tequila in a bar instead of raki in the name of underlining Turkish Identity or red wine to underline the "intellectual artist" figure. Besides catching fish and making raki-fish lunch, putting a bowl for leaking chimney is nice choices to make everything real in such a "fantastical" romance.

Usually Turkish directors have an intention to exaggerate scenes of love and sadness with slow motion effects, high pitch music, but the directors choice in İncir reçeli was too naïve as in the scenes of cigarette burn in the tea shop, kiss int the bus stop, rose petals on the floor and etc. time pass effects were also successful. So shortly I believe it is a perfect 8 with all goods and bads.

It's a cool movie. I also exaggerated this movie when I was in love. But it's not an exaggerated movie. It's beautiful, but not as pretty.

P. S : Fig jam is really good. Taste it.

storyline and characters are not well crafted but it has beautiful scenes
defneover25 August 2012
"Incir receli" is not a good film and I'm surprised to see that so many people have thought of this film as one of the best in Turkish cinema. I'm seriously disappointed. The main problem is that neither the characters nor the storyline are well developed. The plot is simple and I usually like movies built on simple ideas. However, in this one, the simple idea is not well-crafted as to present well-developed characters and relationships. The movie intends to tell a love story but the dialogues and the events that follow each other don't really build up a strong love relationship. One constantly needs to assume that their love is really intense without actually knowing how they have come to have such an intense relationship. The characters and their relationships are much more superficial than the director has intended to present. One thing that I liked about the movie is that it has beautiful scenes. The movie was sort of like a collection of beautiful photographs for me. Some of them reminded me of other movies or photographs, others were quite original. It's also nice to see that Istanbul is becoming a stage for more and more movies, inspiring more and more original shots.

The best Turkish movie
lena-332-4169591 April 2012
Incir Receli is far the best Turkish movie I've ever seen. The plot is simple, but very powerful. It starts as a movie where you just don't expect, with regards to background it is situated to, it will develop in such a pure romanticism - romantic story. I was tucked in from its first seconds and stroke by it for way longer than just the end of the movie. It is beautifully filmed, nice original scenes which slowly change into another. Nice colors. Music lives with the story, kicks in at the exact moment to support integrity of the picture and leave the right feeling. Music is beautiful by its own. Its worth to watch.. not only once.

Should have been a musical
halils695917 December 2011
Well, before I start criticizing, I should say that I am sick of seeing films which take place in Turkish villages, inner parts of Turkey etc; therefore, I believe that these "contemporary" films should be supported. However, this film, "incir receli", is simply just not good. It is sexist, unrealistic (fantastic even), way too theatrical with below average acting. It is hard not to be angry really; what now, film says the man had the right to be furious with the girl if the "dying" man was her "former" boyfriend! Also, the "fake" drunk acting was abysmal; lines were "cheesy". Only consolation is that this film would turn in to an average film if it was a musical.

Beautiful film
jamieguner31 March 2012
This film was beautiful. I disagree with the other viewer's comments. This film is not sexist. This film was also filmed in Istanbul not a small city, so I am guessing the viewer has never been to Turkey. Maybe the English translations weren't good. I don't know, I saw this film in the original Turkish and it was beautiful. Admittedly, some parts were a bit predictable and some of the symbolism was cliché, but this film explores a non-traditional love story and it has many other side stories and alternate themes that are explored. I wonder if it was based on a true story and I am very impressed with the writer/director's portrayal of a multi-faceted Turkish male character.

Why?
CaliforniaRoll7 April 2022
I read the plot before watching the movie and it caught my attention. It's nice that it's about 2 ordinary people. Turkish people are emotional and the producers who know this do not hesitate to apply the classic tactic. In other words, it was already clear that the movie would have a depressive structure. It's hard to understand why they tried to create special situations that would make the movie feel more depressed and emotional instead of letting it run its course. This effort has revealed many fictional and logic errors. It also didn't need the techniques you used to make the movie more marginal. Maybe those who like exaggerated depression and emotionality may like it, but I did not like it.

INCIR RECELI: Great Scenario
sinanturgut11 June 2011
The film was a good try, but needed a lot of work. I think that, had it been more comic-faithful. It could have been difficult for non-comic readers to get into. As an emotional film, it's perfectly fine. Fig Jam is a movie 'shown value'. Before, I did not want to watch this movie.Like me too, you will not want to watch this bored movie. You will be bored in the beginning of the film. But the patience to follow the film. At the end of the movie your emotions do not listen to you. Make sure you get a handkerchief with you before the start of the movie, because at the end of the film certainly it will work. Turks began to pull away a good movie. Cheap but great, strike scenario. Whos do not like fig jam, immediately start to love, the better. Until now, this is the most beautiful films which I watched..

one of the best Turkish movies
SuleKalmis19 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie for about 4 times. At the final scene of each end, i cannot keep myself crying. This is because of the male main actor; he cries very real.

Throughout the movie, there are some striking phrases that make the movie interesting and somehow deep. It focuses on love while the focus on the loneliness of people with AIDS is also there. The movie is informative on the possible causes of the disease and gives a strong input and insight to the relevant physicians. For example; you cannot know if a taxi driver suddenly opens the window. This phrase mean nothing to many of us. But for those with AIDS, this may cause them to get flu and die because of this flu.

The misunderstanding, regrets, collapse, recovery, love without sex, common memories, views of Istanbul.. everything was nice. It also reminded me of my university years in Ankara and Istanbul.

This movie is a must see movie that clearly shows the real lives of many people in the relatively developed parts of my country. I also liked the second movie but the love in this movie was so strong that I could not feel the same with the other movie.

unorthodox love story takes place in Istanbul
mertaylan10 February 2013
Stunning debut performance from both actor and the actress, unorthodox love story, lively music and Istanbul... if you don't set your expectations over the clouds you'll definitely love this movie. I watched it in Turkish and every single sentence does perfectly make sense but I am not sure how good the subtitles are. The only negative comment I can make, is the lack of a surprising end due to the referral made by the protagonist in the 3/4 of the movie. The age difference between the heroin and the source of HIV disease can be pointed out without making it blindingly obvious. The emotional peak of the story is very well balanced and it is far above being poor. Despite the 'generous' clue, the final scene is still kept strong enough to make you cry. I would say give it a try, you won't regret.

My rating: 8
kekca14 August 2014
I would wrote about a film (with few exceptions) if he is not worth watching. This is a blog where you can surely find something to watch, rather than read about some bad title. Perhaps highly inflated rating, maybe familiar storyline and main topic - I will explain this. Film recommended to me by my mysterious friend who I had the joy to see only once in my life.

Extremely simple film, Turkish (bravo to the Turks), with bold methods on moments, incredible performance and deployment of the story. Film that inspires and makes you follow every moment because later it turns out that it is a piece of the puzzle of the whole picture.

Incredibly cute main female character with incredibly sad fate. Film, of course, about love, about how to import creativity in your life, turning it into such. About rarity of the real things in life. With the message of our relation to others nearby, especially the balance between them and our ego. This movie is not light, but it is very good.

And do not forget - good things still happen, though not in an ideal way. Enjoy watching!

A beautiful film!
thebozkurt10 May 2015
I have read other reviews about the film. Well, we cannot claim that it's the best movie ever, it's understandable but It's not possible to understand how some people reviewed it as a bad or low quality movie!! Probably, they had some jealousy issues with the director or some of the actors playing in the movie.. The film is simple, but so beautiful. It's not a complicated story to understand, but simplicity makes it so nice to watch. Until the last minute you don't know how the film's gonna end. A nice romantic, love movie that contains some humors also. Highly recommended! If you like love movies that tells some impossible love stories you will like for sure!

Now I'm a fussy eater but I would 'try' FIG JAM!
misshoneyholmes15 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say this is now in my top 5 films of all time! Visually stunning, cleverly written and a film you would be nuts to miss!! I still see the visuals of the water dripping onto the cigarette - the couple making out with candles around them shot from above, the room with the post it's all still and then one falls and the lights leaks through! Wowsers this was a VISUAL DELIGHT!!! Hats off to the DOP for capturing the most beautiful moments of stillness, hats off to the script writer for the one liners loaded with meaning! And hats of to the director and all else for casting choices, getting them to that relaxed state where nessesary. I hope to one day have the opportunity to work with this team. A creative blessing on every level, natural normal and incredibly beautifully simple! If you loved 'The Notebook' this is a MUST, I cried I cried some more and ten minutes later I was still upset but strangely happy.

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie last year. I saw a lot I liked. I think is a very good movies. This too much emotional movies. The film stars Melike Güner and Halil Sezai Paracıkoğlu. It is the story of 30-year-old man and a girl's about the love. Duygu and Metin meet in the bar. Duygu is very drunk. So, Metin went to take her home but Duygu is gone in the morning. This event be a continuous and Duygu and Metin make friends. Then love starts. The acting is very good I think this is a very emotional love. But I don't think this movie is very good. Could have been better. this movie is very classic. It is a really emotional. I like the movie in general.
