'The Wolverine', 'Planes' and 'You're Next' In Today's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

A rather typical ratings bulletin today with a smattering of titles we've never heard of, a couple of recognizable direct-to-video titles such as Hatchet III and Danny Trejo's Vengeance, then a few of note such as the PG-13 for The Wolverine, a grisly R-rating for You're Next and then a PG for Disney's animated Cars spinoff, Planes. The R-rating for Zachary Heinzerling's documentary Cutie and the Boxer (August 16) is interesting seeing how it's for "nude art images". At some point can't we just admit that everyone has seen someone nakedc Here's the trailer. The complete bulletin follows: Apartment 1303 Rated R For language, some violent content and brief sexuality. Battle Ground Rated R For war violence and grisly images. Cutie And The Boxer Rated R For nude art images. Danny Trejo's Vengeance Rated R For strong violence, language and some nudity. Free Samples Rated R For brief language. Gloria Rated R For sexual content,

Jess Weixler and Director Jay Gammill Talk Free Samples, Making an Unpleasant Character Likeable, and Changes from the Script

Free Samples is a quirky indie dramedy about Jillian (in a truly terrific performance by Jess Weixler), a law school drop-out who fills in as server at her friend’s ice cream truck. While spending the day giving out free samples to eccentric and oddball locals, she also finds herself re-evaluating what and who she wants in life. The film also stars Jesse Eisenberg, Jason Ritter, Halley Feiffer and Tippi Hedren. During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Jess Weixler and director Jay Gammill talked about what it was about the script that made them want to get involved with the project, how this great cast came together, the challenges in making an often unpleasant character likeable, and how much the final cut of the film changed from the original script. Jay also talked about doing another film with screenwriter Jim Beggarly, while Jess talked about wanting to

“Free Samples” Preview: Tippi Hedren’s Gay Husband

Watch Tippi Hedren reflect on a gay husband in this clip from the dramedy Free Samples, available via video on demand today.

Well, here’s something thrilling. In the indie comic drama Free Samples, Betty (played by the radiant Tippi Hedren) has a heart-to-heart with protagonist Jillian (Jess Weixler of Teeth) that involves a confession about a gay husband. Check out our clip above, where Tippi’s candor about her husband’s sexuality is both refreshing and funny.

The movie concerns “a law school drop-out (Weixler) who fills in as a server on a friend’s food truck, where she doles out free samples of ice cream. The job tests her patience, and while she figures out what to do with her life, she finds herself being courted by a young man (Jesse Eisenberg) whom she barely remembers from the night before.” Aw, Jesse Eisenberg. You’re one of my non-gay husbands.

‘Free Samples’ Trailer: Jesse Eisenberg Wants Some Good Stuff From Jess Weixler

If you’ve somehow avoided the charms of actress Jess Weixler thus far, this first trailer for Jay Gammill‘s Free Samples may grate on your nerves. Who is this flighty chick fucking up something as simple as giving out free samples of ice cream from a truck? Who is this young lass breaking Jesse Eisenberg‘s heart? Who drops out of law school to be a loser? Why should I care? You should care precisely because it’s Weixler who is playing shiftless leading lady Jillian as said law-school-drop-out-ice-cream-loser and she is nothing short of consistently wonderful throughout her myriad indie roles. From The Lie to Peter and Vandy to Teeth (yup, that’s her!), Weixler is the best thing about every film she’s ever starred in, so if she’s headlining a lo-fi outing about ice cream shilling and deferred dreams, we’re sold. No wonder Eisenberg wants to get into “the good stuff

Jesse Eisenberg And Emile Hirsch Build An Atomic Bomb In Drama Midnight Sun

After scoring his first Academy Award nomination with the Mark Zuckerberg biopic The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg took a break from drama with comedies like 30 Minutes or Less, Free Samples and To Rome With Love. But with his next funny feature Now You See Me poised to hit theaters this summer, Eisenberg is looking to dig back into drama with the atomic bomb-centered Midnight Sun. Reporting from the European Film Market, Screen Daily reveals Eisenberg will front the film alongside Diane Kruger (Inglorious Basterds) and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild). Written and directed by actor turned filmmaker Chris Eigeman, its story is set in 1943 America. Fresh from graduate school, two young people (presumably Eisenberg and Hirsch) are recruited by the government for a top-secret project that will take them away from the jazz-soaked atmosphere of New York, and into the deserts of New Mexico. Kruger is expected to play one

First Poster And Synopsis For The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby

For my money, with lead actors like James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain there’s almost no way it could be a disappointing film, or films.

Ned Benson (In Defiance of Gravity) wrote the two scripts and will direct both films. The impressive cast also includes William Hurt (Into the Wild), Viola Davis (The Help), Jess Weixler (Free Samples), Bill Hader (SNL), Ciarán Hinds (Munich), and Nina Arianda (Midnight in Paris).

The first poster and synopsis for the dramas told in two parts – The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers have found their way online.

I assume that poster and synopsis may be an unofficial leak because they have been removed from the film’s websites at the request of the studio.

There’s no release date for the film just yet.

Here’s the teaser poster which looks like a bad Photoshop job. The

Told in two parts – The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers – the dramas see James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain star in the leads, and now the first poster has found its way online.

“Two films – interwoven to complete one story. Set in the hip areas of New York City, we follow the paths of Eleanor Rigby and her husband Conor. When Eleanor suddenly disappears back to her family home and avoids all contact with Conor, we question what broke down the relationship that once seemed so right.”

Jesse Eisenberg Is Haunting In First Images From Richard Ayoade's The Double

Even though he's not even two years removed from his Best Actor Oscar nomination for The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg has felt weirdly absent lately. It might because when he was playing Mark Zuckerberg he was absolutely everywhere, and since then he's appeared only in tiny movies (Free Samples, Why Stop Now) or small studio films that nobody saw (30 Minutes Or Less, To Rome With Love). Ok, he also voiced one of the birds in Rio, but that barely even counts. Anyway, Eisenberg is on his way back early next year in the magician heist thriller Now You See Me, but much more intriguing is his team-up with Submarine director Richard Ayoade for The Double, a loose adaptation of a novel by Dostoevsky. Eisenberg stars as an ordinary man who slowly loses his grip on reality when he encounters his doppelgänger, and we've now got our first look at ...

2012 Austin Film Festival Announces Titles, Including ‘Not Fade Away,’ ‘Flight,’ ‘Silver Linings Playbook,’ and More

While most of Austin, Texas is currently busy gearing up for Fantastic Fest (including our own Fantastic Fest Death Squad), we’d be remiss to not mention that another one of Atx’s homegrown film festivals, the concisely-named Austin Film Festival, has just released their lineup. And it’s a real beauty! The festival, kicking off in just under a month, will open with David Chase’s Not Fade Away and will also include screenings of such buzzed-about titles as Flight, Silver Linings Playbook, The Sessions, Quartet, and The Sapphires. The festival has yet to announce their Closing Night Film, but with such an already-strong lineup, it should be a doozy. After the break, take a look at the current feature-length lineup for the 2012 Austin Film Festival and Conference, including listings for their comedy and documentary sections. First Poster and Images from The Kitchen with Laura Prepon & Bryan Greenberg

Best known for their work on the small screen, Laura Prepon (That ’70s Show) and Bryan Greenberg (How to Make it in America) are both great in all I’ve seen them in to date, and after starring opposite each other in ABC’s short-lived October Road, they’re set to reunite for the big screen this year in The Kitchen.

The first poster and images have made their way online, giving us a nice first look at the main players of the ensemble comedy, set in its entirety within the titular room.

“In this ensemble comedy set entirely inside a kitchen in Silverlake, a birthday party is about to start.

The party belongs to that of Jennifer (Laura Prepon), who’s about to turn 30. But she is in no mood to party today. She has just left her job, as well as her cheating boyfriend, Paul (Bryan Greenberg). Her

On The Rise '12: 5 Cinematographers Lighting Up Screens In Recent Years

Following our looks at actors, actresses, screenwriters and directors to watch in recent months, when the time came to put together a list of cinematographers (as we did two years ago), we went in with an open mind. But what was interesting is realizing, after the fact, that in an era where 35mm film is allegedly being phased out, that all five have done perhaps their most distinctive work on old-fashioned celluloid, rather than digital.

All have worked in digital of course, at least in the commercial world, and some have done hugely impressive work on new formats. But most of our five are fierce advocates for good 'ol 35mm, and it's another sign that the death knell shouldn't be rung for the old ways just yet. As long as there are talented DoPs like the ones below, and on the following pages, working closely with filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson,
