First Look: Bryan Cranston as Blacklisted Hollywood Writer 'Trumbo'

11 November 2014 3:36 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

After tackling political drama and comedy with the likes of Recount, Game Change and The Campaign, director Jay Roach is heading further into the past for a historical drama called Trumbo. The title refers to screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, a real Hollywood screenwriter who defied the House Un-American Activities Committee by refusing to testify regarding accusations of ties to communism. Trumbo ended up being blacklisted and sentenced to nearly a year in prison but never stopped writing movies, and now this first look photo shows the Oscar winner brought to life by "Breaking Bad" Emmy winner Bryan Cranston. Here's the first image from Jay Roach's Trumbo from Entertainment Weekly: Trumbo is directed by Jay Roach and written by television writer John McNamara. The film tells the story of real-life screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, the scribe of classics like Spartacus and Roman Holiday, who was blacklisted and sent to prison during the »

Wahlberg and Ferrell previously starred together in the comedy The Other Guys . In August of 2010, St. Louis beat out big cities in The Other Guys contest on Facebook and hosted the “The Other Guys Other Premiere.” Both actors were on hand for the red carpet premiere.

Check Out the We The Economy Animated Shorts, Adam McKay’s “The Unbelievably Sweet Alpacas” and Chris Henchy’s “Gdp Smackdown”

21 October 2014 8:49 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Financial institutions have a leg-up on the American populace because economics are difficult to understand.  They're also kind of boring, and Americans love to be entertained.  We the Economy: 20 Short Films You Can’t Afford to Miss is a series of short films that attempt to use entertainment as means of educating people about the economy.  Funny or Die has released two animated shorts from the anthology: "The Unbelievably Sweet Alpacas" directed by Adam McKay (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy) and "Gdp Smackdown" by Chris Henchy (writer on The Campaign). These are interesting shorts, but they unintentionally reveal another problem in America: confirmation bias.  For example, those who deny income inequality exists in America or that any solution is "socialism" won't be swayed by McKay's short. There's no argument that can upset their worldview.  These shorts may use entertainment to convey economic facts, but in America, the only "facts »

See New Movies By Adam McKay, Catherine Hardwicke and More For Free in a Theater This Month

8 October 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Going to the movies is expensive, and in this economy there’s less incentive than usual to make it to the multiplex just for a couple hours of entertainment, especially when so much of it is just reruns on the big screen (another Dracula, seriously?) — never mind all the other complaints you all have about the theatrical experience. The movies should be seen as a getaway from our troubles, just as they were for much of the Great Depression, but this time around we have so many other options to keep us distracted. Well, what if there was a movie playing in theaters for free? Yeah, you’ll still have to pay for a babysitter, gas, parking and concessions, if those things apply, but the main event costs you nothing on October 20th when you go out to see a bunch of new movies by Adam McKay (Anchorman), Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Steve »

The Hobbit’s Dean O’Gorman Signs On To Play Kirk Douglas In Trumbo

23 September 2014 5:29 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Casting a Hollywood biopic must be difficult, not least because you have to find contemporary stars who vaguely resemble past ones. That’s one of the many problems facing the producers of Trumbo, a biopic about the famous Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo who was blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

So far, casting has been going well, and today, the producers can scratch another name off their list, as they’ve found the man to play actor and Trumbo defender Kirk Douglas.

Dean O’Gorman, best known for his role as Fili in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit movies, has come on board Trumbo in the part of the iconic Hollywood star. He’ll join an ever-growing cast that already includes Bryan Cranston in the titular role, David James Elliot as John Wayne, Diane Lane as Trumbo’s wife, and Helen Mirren as the gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.

Watch This Short Superhero Movie Being Turned Into a Feature From Will Ferrell and Adam McKay

14 August 2014 3:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

“Produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay” might not mean a lot these days. Under their Gary Sanchez banner, they’ve given us disappointments like The Campaign, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and this summer’s Tammy, to name just a few. Even Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was a slight letdown. Their future might seem no better, with movies like a Hansel and Gretel sequel, a Flintstones feature and an adaptation of the TV series Manimal all in development. But maybe their first animated feature could be something to actually look forward to. Titled Henchmen, the film will be co-written and directed by Adam Wood, a former Pixar animator who also helmed a direct-to-video mermaid movie starring Barbie. As in the doll. While the feature won’t be out for another two years, according to Deadline, Wood recently completed a related short titled Henchmen: Ill Suited. It’s not exactly a teaser trailer, as »

Carla Gugino Will Go To The Brink For HBO

14 August 2014 8:19 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

HBO has delivered some terrific comedies over the years, from the quirky musical series Flight of the Conchords to biting political satire Veep, and with the cast that the premium cable network is pulling together for its upcoming comedy The Brink, there’s reason to believe HBO has another major hit on its hands.

Now, our anticipation has been raised with news that Watchmen actress Carla Gugino has joined the cast in a multi-episode arc. Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption), Jack Black (School of Rock) and Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is The New Black) all topline The Brink, which is described as “an epic dark comedy.”

As per Deadline: The Brink focuses on “a geopolitical crisis and its effect on three disparate and desperate men: U.S. Secretary of State Walter Hollander (Robbins); Alex Coppins (Black), a lowly Foreign Service officer; and Zeke Callahan (Pablo Schreiber), an ace Navy fighter pilot. »

New Cast Members Join Jack Black & Tim Robbins In ‘The Brink’

6 August 2014 7:17 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

HBO have got a new comedy show in the works and it has just added a few more cast members to the mix; Jaimie Alexander and Bernard White will join Jack Black and Tim Robbins in the shows’ main roles. The Brink, a half-hour comedy series tipped to be released by the end of the year, will be a humorous slant on the scramble to prevent geopolitical crisis as World War III looms ever closer.

Doesn’t sound that funny to us either but there’s several reasons we’re remaining optimistic. Firstly, the script is being written by seasoned writer/producer Roberto Benabib and his brother Kim, the former with credits including Ally McBeal and Weeds. Secondly, on board directing is Jay Roach who makes his first foray into directing a TV series after movies such as Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Meet The Parents and The Campaign. »

Bryan Cranston and Helen Mirren are set to star in Jay Roach’s Trumbo, a film about Roman Holiday writer Dalton Trumbo, their reps confirmed to EW.

Cranston will play the titular character, who made a career as a screenwriter before he was blacklisted from Hollywood in 1947 after refusing to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. After using a pseudonym, Trumbo was eventually able to claim his works, including 1960s Spartacus and Exodus, using his real name.

John Goodman Sought To Un-Blacklist Cranston In ‘Trumbo’

31 July 2014 10:13 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Austin Powers director Jay Roach is turning his lens on a more serious subject for latest picture Trumbo, starring Bryan Cranston. Cranston plays the title role of Dalton Trumbo, the screenwriter of Spartacus amongst others, who ended up on the infamous blacklist thanks to the House Un-American Activities Committee in the late Forties. One of numerous individuals who refused to testify and hence got tarred by the Commie brush, Trumbo worked under pseudonyms, partly helped by producer Frank King. Roach wants John Goodman in the part of King and if the bear-like actor accepts he and Cranston will be back in the movie subterfuge business – the pair previously worked on a conspiracy to create a fake sci-fi film in Argo.

Soreness abounds to this day about the blacklist, with stars like Ed Harris refusing to applaud director Elia Kazan during the Oscars in 1999 due to his naming names. Others who »
