Sony Lawyers Cut Material From Will Smith's 'Concussion' To Avoid Potential Legal Hassles With The N.F.L.

Earlier this week, the first trailer for Sony's football head-injury exposé drama "Concussion" dropped, and the studio is already busy managing the careful narrative they're going to stick to in the months of promotion that lay ahead, in addition to a possible awards run. The studio which also released inspired-by-true-story tales like "Zero Dark Thirty," "Moneyball," and "The Social Network" knows firsthand that the veracity of "Concussion" will come under scrutiny, but even more, their movie takes on one of the biggest and most beloved institutions in America: the N.F.L. And even before cameras rolled, Sony's lawyers were making sure they didn't poke the sports lion in the eye. 6 Oscar Season Narratives That Could Shape the Race This Year

31 August 2015 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With summer doldrums in the rearview, In Contention has found a new home just in time for the annual Oscar season…and not a moment too soon. A number of fall film releases sit primed for reveals at the Venice, Telluride and Toronto film festivals over the next several weeks, kicking off the race to the 88th Academy Awards.

As ever, a number of the season’s hopefuls will live and die by the narratives conjured in their wake. Because as we know — and I can’t imagine this notion is all that controversial  — an Oscar race is as much about the stories told off-screen as it is about the stories told onscreen.

Here are a few such stories to keep an eye on as we wade into the deep end of the year. Don’t be surprised if a number of them are revisited at length in this space over the next six months. »

'The Real reason women don't direct more action movies' satire is infuriatingly accurate

28 August 2015 8:19 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Either Funny or Die has an impressive turnaround time, or it’s just bleak serendipity that the role of female directors in the Hollywood blockbuster machine came up right before their latest video dropped. Either way, this lampooning of the process of choosing a director manages an interesting trick. It both feels absurd And as if it could be happening in an office somewhere, right now, with little to no dialogue changes. The Real Reason Women Don't Direct More Action Movies from Funny Or Die Some quick background. A week ago, director Colin Trevorrow was asked if he thought he’d have been given the chance to direct “Jurassic World” after only one indie film — “Safety Not Guaranteed” — if he’d been a woman. After all, the historical evidence points to no. Despite rave reviews, you don’t see Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”) on any shortlists. Despite winning Best Director »

Movie Review: The Gift

7 August 2015 2:00 AM, PDT | CinemaNerdz | See recent CinemaNerdz news »

It’s nearly impossible to say anything about what makes The Gift so good without revealing its two crucial, spine-tinglingly effective plot twists. The best any critic can really do in reviewing the flick is to say: The Gift is very, very good. Just stop reading and go see it now. But since I’m obligated to shake down something more than fifty words about the film, here are a few things that can be said about The Gift without blowing its surprises.

For its first third or so The Gift is a perfectly entertaining 1990s-style thriller. A bright and successful young couple, Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall), move from Chicago to Simon’s hometown – Los Angeles. Everything seems rosy at first for the pair. Simon’s just gotten a lucrative job and they’ve found a swanky new house, complete with a koi pond along the front walk. »

The Gift review: Don't judge this film by its terrible trailer

6 August 2015 1:30 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Director: Joel Edgerton; Screenwriter: Joel Edgerton; Starring: Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, Joel Edgerton; Running time: 108 mins; Certificate: 15

Well that was a turn up for the books. Warrior and Zero Dark Thirty star Joel Edgerton's directorial debut The Gift comes across like a naff slasher movie from its trailer (the presence of Blumhouse Productions on the credits does nothing to allay these fears), but in reality it's a nifty little psychological thriller that asks if it's possible to run away from buried secrets in your past.

Ostensibly a three-hander between Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall and Edgerton, the story revolves around a married couple who up sticks for a fresh start. Bateman's Simon is a corporate hotshot, while Hall's Robyn is a work-at-home designer keen to have a family. Their marriage is seemingly perfect, until the arrival of Edgerton's Gordo, an old schoolmate from Simon's past who carries with him deep-rooted emotional scars. »

Tom Cruise wins over the haters

2 August 2015 5:42 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Anecdotal evidence suggests a segment of the Australian population hasn.t forgiven Tom Cruise for divorcing Nicole Kidman or his couch-jumping antics and his Scientology beliefs.

The anti-Cruise factor seems to have dissipated, at least among cinemagoers, judging by last weekend's opening for Mission: Impossible . Rogue Nation.

The $150 million Paramount/Skydance picture amassed $5.15 million, including $137,000 in previews, up 21% on the 2011 debut of Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

In 27 of 32 international markets, the action-adventure co-starring Rebecca Ferguson, Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner registered the biggest opening of Cruise.s career. (His personal best here is still The War of the Worlds. $6.5 million in 2005).

Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (who wrote Valkyrie, Edge Of Tomorrow and Jack Reacher, which he also directed), the fifth instalment of the franchise rang up $55.5 million in the Us and $64.5 million in the rest of the world.

Australian exhibitors were impressed with the opening, »
