The choir
30 October 2011 | by (New York) – See all my reviews

A supermarket in a French town in the setting for this romantic comedy. Marie-Jo, a single mother of two, has to perform acrobatic maneuvers in order to feed them with her job at the Magic Market supermarket. Unknown to her, the marketing department decided to bring a new manager to boost sales in the store. This man, Antoine, comes to supervise a demoralized work force who are badly paid and now must go through the changes the new man is trying to impose.

Marie-Jo, whose salary does not let her be extravagant, relies on the discarded merchandise that is out of date. Antoine sees her taking some of the outdated items and makes her put them back. Marie-Jo and her fellow cashiers do everything possible to make Antoine's life impossible. Marie-Jo has been involved in a local choir that meets to prepare for a choir competition in the area. Antoine wants to eliminate a bulletin board in which different services are offered within the community, but he has set his eyes on the advertisement that asks for volunteers for the town's choir.

When Antoine shows up to join the choir, he is surprised to find some of the supermarket workers among its members. At the same time, the workers from the supermarket are shocked to see their boss among them. Not only that, but Antoine is the only man in the choir! The leader of the group is appalled auditioning the new aspirant, but he figures he is the only brave one that is willing to participate. When Monsieur Andre dies suddenly, the choir decides Marie-Jo should take his place. Marie-Jo is not exactly happy to take over, but since everybody agrees, she complies. Her problem is basically how can she make Antoine sing without sounding off key. Eventually, Marie-Jo and Antoine will find a way to make music together in more ways than with the local choir.

A romantic comedy from France made for television was directed by Pierre Isoard and based on a screenplay by Barbara Grinberg and Silvie Chanteaux. The film is entertaining because of the elements that went into it. In Lea Drucker and Arnaud Ducret, the creators found perfect casting for their production that does not pretend to be anything but a good time at the movies. Others in the film, Julia Dorval and Claudia Tagbo.
