With the house a Robin Hill complete, at jealous and vindictive Soames takes issue with Philip Bosinney having spent £400 over the agreed amount. He takes Bosinney to court, much to the consternation of those around him and further alienates his wife Irene. Forgetting to lock her bedroom door at home, Soames enters Irene's bedroom and forces himself on her. She packs her bags and leaves the next day but when Bosinney hears what he has done to her, he dashes out into a thick London fog to find Soames.
