Michelle Dockery Talks Downton Abbey Season 2

30 December 2011 7:00 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

On Season 2 of Downton Abbey (returning to PBS on January 8, 2012), it is 1916 and World War I has shaken the Crawley family estate to its very foundations. As a way of life is forever blasted apart, alliances are tested as both heroes and villains struggle to survive and forge ahead. During this interview to promote the return of the popular period drama, actress Michelle Dockery, who plays the clever but cold oldest daughter, Lady Mary Crawley, talked about where things are at with the story in Season 2, what it’s like to play such a complex character, if she could live as emotionally repressed as Lady Mary, and the costume envy that goes on with this show. She also talked about her role in Joe Wright’s next film, an adaptation of Anna Karenina, and her desire to do more modern-day work. Check out what she had to say after the jump. »

My Favorite Movie: Keira Knightley

2 December 2011 7:00 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

"I think my favorite movie has to be [director Patrice Chéreau's] 'La Reine Margot' ('Queen Margot').  I think it's the one that I come back to all the time and still completely love. I think it's probably because it crosses so many genres.

"I think one of my least favorite things is the idea that a film has to fit into a pigeonhole. And with this one you have romance and action and adventure and history and it's breadth is huge, and it's beautiful and the acting is wonderful, so that one .... 'Reds,' the Warren Beatty film with Beatty and Diane Keaton. I love those two performances, again totally beautiful. I think I've watched that one on a bit of a loop. And [Alan J. Pakula's] 'Klute' is another one that I love. That's three."

Top 10 Directors Of The Noughties

20 November 2011 12:47 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

We all know the importance of the director, they are the heart and soul of a film (in layman terms… we don’t want to go into the auteur theory here) and few have careers that flourish decade after decade, yet the Spielberg’s and the Scorsese’s are still going strong.

The future of cinema is folly to guess, but below are a list of ten of the best visionaries in the industry from the past eleven years, filmmakers I hope go on to define the 21st century. I’ve decided to look back on the last decade, and moving forward into the current, to see what filmmakers have made the greatest impressions and gone on to take the world by storm, with the future of cinema in the back of my mind.

Here’s a look at what new talent I think has grown and will flourish from »

Rising star Alexandra Roach to join Dakota Fanning in Girl's Night Out

9 November 2011 12:48 PM, PST | ScreenTerrier | See recent ScreenTerrier news »

24 year Welsh actress Alexandra Roach will be joining Dakota Fanning in Girl's Night Out.

She is to play a young Princess Elizabeth in Michael Hoffman's planned film about the future queen and her sister, Princess Margaret, being allowed out of Buckingham Palace to celebrate the end of the second world war in 1945.

Dakota Fanning became attached to the project to play a young Princess Margaret back in February as reported on Screenterrier.

Alexandra (represented by Troika) has been cast in five leading productions just a year after leaving drama school (Rada). We first saw her in Being Human, and she has since filmed The Iron Lady, Trap for Cinderella, Private Peaceful and is currently filming the role Countess Nordston opposite Keira Knightley, Jude Law and Aaron Johnson in Joe Wright's Anna Karenina.

In her first newspaper interview, she told the Observer that she was pinching herself in disbelief: "I know it sounds corny, »

Keira Knightley Will Be Effie Gray

8 November 2011 9:58 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Keira Knightley is said to be in talks to play artistic muse Effie Gray in the biopic "Untouched" which is being pre-sold at Afm by Ealing Metro International reports Thompson on Hollywood.

The story follows the real-life love affair between the beautiful young woman, her Victorian artist and poet husband John Ruskin, and Ruskin's protege - painter John Everett Millais.

A love triangle in a period tale is very familiar territory for Knightley. Both her upcoming films "A Dangerous Method" and "Anna Karenina" deal with similar situations, same with much of her past work including "The Duchess" and "The Edge of Love".

Brazilian director Andrucha Waddington helms the period piece which isn't to be confused with Emma Thompson's forthcoming feature "Effie" starring Dakota Fanning as Gray. »

Keira Knightley Starring as Effie Gray In ‘Untouched’; Rufus Sewell Latest to Join ‘Paradise Lost’

7 November 2011 3:14 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Nearly eight years after Pirates of the Caribbean, this past April marked the first Keira Knightley film (Last Night) I’ve seen that wasn’t a period piece. There doesn’t seem to be an explanation as to why she’s always been cast in these parts, but the process isn’t stopping. This month will bring the release of A Dangerous Method, and next year sees her reuniting with Joe Wright for Anna Karenina. Now, Toh reports that Knightley will lead Untouched, a biopic of Effie Gray being directed by Andrucha Waddington. The project is currently being sold at the American Film Market by Ealing Metro International.

They tell us that Aleksandra Crapanzano‘s script centers on “the real-life love affair between this beautiful young woman, trapped in a ‘loveless,’ unconsummated marriage to Brit art critic John Ruskin, and his protege, pre-Raphelite painter John Everett Millais.” This either sounds »

Kiera vs. Dakota: Who Will Make the Greater Artist's Muse?

7 November 2011 12:18 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

With all the projects in development in the world drawn from an infinite number of topics, it's always curious to note how many of them inexplicably arise simultaneously on the same topics. Thompson in Hollywood reports that Keira Knightley is considering the lead role in Untouched (2013?) which is a romantic triangle biopic on the artist muse Effie Gray and her relationship to two men, the art critic John Ruskin and his protégé the painter Everett Millais. She married them both during her lifetime, though only the second marriage was consummated.

But get this... Dakota Fanning is also playing this role in a competing feature called simply Effie (2012?) written by everyone's favorite Acting/Screenwriting Double Oscar Winner Emma Thompson. While we'd love to see more movies written by Thompson as well as meatier roles for Dakota Fanning (especially since Elle Fanning fever threatens to consume Hollywood), Keira has actual experience as an artist's muse. »

Alexandra Roach left Rada only last year but the young Welsh actress has had five big parts opposite Hollywood names

Being chosen to appear in a film months after leaving drama college is the dream of every aspiring actor. For Welsh actress Alexandra Roach it is a reality. She is on the brink of international stardom, having been cast in five leading productions just a year after leaving the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada).

Aged 24, Roach's potential has been recognised by some of the industry's foremost directors and producers. She has lead roles in four forthcoming films, and a supporting role in another.

Her break came after she was spotted by Nina Gold, a casting director, in a Rada production, leading to an invitation to audition for one of the most sought-after roles for a young actress – playing the young Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, the much anticipated »

Alexander 'Sideways' Payne is on fine form again, while The Artist never fails to get a standing ovation – Jason Solomons on the news and gossip from the London film festival

Payne sailing

For a director who specialises in cute comedies about men unravelling, Alexander Payne is an unruffled chap. Taking to the stage to introduce his new film, The Descendants, at the mayor's gala, the maker of Sideways and Election sported a bright blue suit — how else should you dress to outshine George Clooney? – and told the audience to forget they'd ever seen an Alexander Payne film (or a George Clooney performance) before. "Look at it as if it's the first time you've discovered us," he said. Judging by the film that followed, these two will go far. The Descendants emerged from the London film festival a very strong awards contender, the audience giving it one of the »

Emily Watson Talks Oranges And Sunshine and War Horse

20 October 2011 6:27 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Oranges and Sunshine is a true-life drama that tells the story of Margaret Humphreys (played by Emily Watson), a social worker from Nottingham, England who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals of recent times. Until the late 1960's, successive UK governments had supported child migration, causing thousands of children to be deported from the UK to Australia. After learning that children as young as four had been told that their parents were dead before being sent to children’s homes on the other side of the world, where they were subjected to horrendous abuse, Margaret single-handedly set out to reunite thousands of families and bring worldwide attention to such an extraordinary miscarriage of justice, that only recently received formal apologies from both sides. At the film’s press day, actress Emily Watson talked about her shock at learning that this all happened within living memory, her reasons for »

Luke Evans, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson Talk The Three Musketeers, The Hobbit and G.I. Joe 2

With director Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers opening October 21, Summit Entertainment held a big press junket in London and I got the chance to head across the pond to interview the cast.  Based on Alexandre Dumas’ classic story, The Three Musketeers stars Logan Lerman, Luke Evans, Ray Stevenson, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz, Matthew Macfayden and Mads Mikkelsen.  In the reboot, “the hot-headed young D’Artagnan (Lerman) joins forces with three rogue Musketeers (MacFadyen, Evans and Stevenson). They must stop the evil Richlieu (Waltz) and face off with Buckingham (Bloom) and the treacherous Milady (Jovovich).”  And unlike many films that have been post converted for a 3D release, the Musketeers was shot in 3D and it looks great.  For more on the film, here’s eight clips. During my interview with the Musketeers, we talked about the amazing real world locations they used in Musketeers, how did »

Why we're watching… Henry Lloyd-Hughes

The 25-year-old rapper-turned-actor and star of the film Weekender

Who's this handsome devil then? David Miliband, Shirley Bassey's husband, and the bully from The Inbetweeners. It's Henry Lloyd-Hughes, rapper turned excellent actor.

Rapper? I know, so clean cut, so James Dean-esque, but he has a damn fine singing voice and he also plays the drums, hence the guns.

Phwoar. Stop it. You've seen him in Miliband of Brothers and the BBC's Bassey biopic, but look forward to seeing a whole lot more of him in the future – the "period sci-fi drama" Dimensions, co-starring Camilla Rutherford and Patrick Godfrey; Roland Emmerich's Anonymous, on the life of Shakespeare; and Anna Karenina, opposite Jude Law and Keira Knightley. Our favourite role so far is as a 90s raver in the film Weekender.

He says: "I wish I looked a bit more like Bruce Springsteen – I'd love to play him in a biopic of his life. »
