Great Job, Internet!: Kyle MacLachlan tells the entire story of Dune in a single brilliant tweet

18 August 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Frank Herbert’s Dune is a notoriously difficult book to adapt, having stymied both directors Alejandro Jodorowsky and—to a slightly lesser extent—David Lynch in their efforts to bring it to the screen. But it turns out that we were all just waiting for a chosen one to arrive, to pierce the veil of time and explain the book/film’s plot to the online hordes. That Twitter Kwisatz Haderach? Kyle MacLachlan, of course.

The Portlandia co-star and Lynchian everyman took time out of his usual day, genially wishing his Twitter followers happy birthday (and, sadly, not making any new episodes of the YouTube web series he used to do with his wife about their dogs talking to each other and going on adventures) in order to field a more in-depth request from a fan: Describe the plot of Lynch’s famously complicated 1984 film, which not even multiple ...

Fox Developing Comedy with ‘Kimmy Schmidt’ Producer & ‘Baskets’ Creator (Exclusive)

17 August 2016 2:04 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Universal Television and Broadway Video are developing the comedy “Amy Damnation” for Fox with veterans Allison Silverman and Jon Krisel on board.

Fox has committed to Silverman’s pilot script with a penalty. The story centers around the titular Amy, a compulsive people-pleaser and all-around doormat who discovers she was once such a headstrong kid that her parents had her exorcised. She sets out to find the demon who possessed her, convinced that only he can give her the power to take back her life.

Silverman is attached as writer and executive producer. Andrew Singer of Broadway Video is also executive producing along with the husband-wife team of Krisel and Danica Radovanov. Krisel will also direct should the script be picked up to pilot.

Silverman is currently a co-executive producer on Netflix comedy “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” She previously worked on “The Office” and “The Colbert Report,” winning two primetime Emmys for writing.

10 August 2016 10:48 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

At last, a category in which the broadcast networks more than hold their own. The over-the-air latenight shows thrive here, with established franchises “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tonight Show” and “The Late Late Show” all racking up nominations. Basic cable fares well here too, with HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” as the lone nominee from premium cable.

Let’s talk about sex: The Madonna/Whore sketch goes where Schumer loves to tread.

She deals with the mixed messages about sex from her bed buddy, who wants “Hermione from the third movie and Nicki Minaj.” She’s confused about whether to play the good girl or the bad girl. Meanwhile, cheaper isn’t necessarily better, as Amy Schumer discovers when she takes a pal on a “Sex and the City” bus tour in New York. “This is a really good tour I bought you,” she »

Bill Hader, Fred Armisen Share Origin Stories for 2 of ‘SNL’s’ Best Bits

Bill Hader and Fred Armisen are responsible for many of the most memorable characters and sketches in “SNL” history — and TheWrap now knows how two of our favorite skits came to TV. During a recent interview, we asked the “Portlandia” male lead exactly how much he and fellow former-“Saturday Night Live” star Kristen Wiig would know before hitting the “Weekend Update” desk as unprepared singers Garth & Kat. He summed it up with one word: “Nonsense.” Also Read: Fred Armisen, Bill Hader Goof on Silly TCA Question “So, it was nothing. Empty head, and I would start it and Kristin would just follow, »

2016 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Variety Sketch Series

Quick Hits

Last Year’s Winner: “Inside Amy Schumer” Was It an Upset? No. Still Eligible? Yes. Hot Streak: “SNL” has been nominated for Outstanding Variety Series nine years in a row. Previously, it was nominated for four straight years between 2001 and 2004, but it hasn’t won the category since 1993. Fun Fact: This is only the second year of this category’s existence. Previously, all variety series — sketch and talk — competed against each other.

But that was the year of Schumer, where the show really took off as “Trainwreck” dominated the box office. Can she keep things rolling in the new year without a hit film promoting her (extremely great) Comedy Central series?

Chris Longo Jul 15, 2016

The Television Academy has spoken! Here are your 2016 Emmy Nominations...

The time to fill out your Emmy Madness Bracket is now. Wait, wrong event. But that would be fun, wouldn’t it? Kirsten Dunst slugging it out versus her network foe Sarah Paulson for Emmy gold. How about perennial favorite Game Of Thrones pitted against underdog newcomer Mr. Robot in the championship round? In the “peak TV” era, maybe a bracket formatted competition is the only true way to determine the best in the world of television.

Anyway, we’ll have to settle for fan polls and speculation as we countdown to the 68th Annual Emmy Award on Sunday, Sept. 18th on ABC. Until then, here is the list of nominees for the major categories. You can find the full list here.

Killer Cast For 'The Lego Ninjago Movie' Revealed!

27 June 2016 8:12 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

The Lego Movie was a smash when it came out in 2014. It established a particular tone, look, and set a precedent when it came to its voice cast. That film featured Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell, Will Arnett, Channing Tatum, and more. With two more Lego movies already in the pipeline, one would have to wonder how- or if- they could top themselves.

Dave Franco as Lloyd

Michael Peña as Kai

Abbi Jacobson as Nya

Lorne Michaels on ‘SNL’s’ Future, Seth Meyers’ Partisanship, Recruiting Larry David and Not Apologizing for Trump

Lorne Michaels is ready to get away from it all.

Not permanently, of course. Michaels has never been more powerful in television, as he oversees NBC’s late night crown jewels and produces buzzy comedies like IFC’s “Portlandia.” But after overseeing six episodes of NBC’s “Maya and Marty,” which came straight off the “Saturday Night Live” finale, he’s ready to take a two-week vacation. Then it’s back to scouting for new “Saturday Night Live” talent and prepping for the show’s 42nd season.

But before he hit the road, Michaels talked with IndieWire about the state of his ever-growing empire, which is gearing up to take on a historic election season.

Among the highlights: “Saturday Night Live” will likely produce several live primetime “Weekend Update” editions during the lead-up to the November election, just as it did in 2008 and 2012. Also: Michaels agrees that NBC’s “The Apprentice »

2016 Emmy Ballot Oddities: ‘Doctor Who’ in the Running, ‘Game of Thrones’ Finale Goes Down to the Wire

16 June 2016 11:40 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The race for the 2016 Emmys has officially begun. Voting for the TV Academy’s top honors is now open until June 27, and ballots for all categories are available for viewing.

We already knew about some of the season’s more unusual contenders — like Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s joint submission as guest actress for hosting “Saturday Night Live,” and Johnny Depp’s bid for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie for “Funny Or Die Presents Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal: The Movie.”

But Variety perused some of the top categories to find more inevitable oddities, including surprise inclusions (“Doctor Who”!) and exclusions (sorry, “Manhattan”).

• HBO is cutting it awfully close to the wire with the finales of three of their biggest Emmy favorite shows. The final episodes of the current seasons of “Game of Thrones,” “Silicon Valley,” and “Veep” all air June 26, roughly 24 hours before Emmy voting closes. »

Birth Control, Bernie Sanders Provide Comic Fodder for Sketch Series Contenders

15 June 2016 10:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

On the sketch front, master of self-effacement Amy Schumer (Comedy Central’s “Inside Amy Schumer”) continues to shine a spotlight on scenarios and subject matter all too common among American women — clothes shopping when nothing in the store fits even when you’re a normal and healthy size 10, ageism and sexism in the entertainment industry, and lack of access to birth control — while stablemate “Key & Peele” (in its final season) and IFC’s “Portlandia” continue to make fun of everything we like to make fun of: Oregon hipsters, overpriced vegan restaurants, and marital infidelity.

Over at Netflix, sketch icons Bob Odenkirk and David Cross revived their “Mr. Show” magic with an event series and “The Characters” added a new twist to the stories of funny favorites.

The 41st season of “Saturday Night Live” featured some of the most uproarious presidential campaign skits to date, with Larry David playing a better Bernie Sanders than Sanders himself. Bill Hader and Fred Armisen mocked docus in style with “Documentary Now,” Jason Ritter and Greg Kinnear turned up on “Drunk History” poking fun at paleontologists, and “Billy on the Street” showcased Anna Kendrick in a hilarious bit about dating app Tinder.
