It's All About Context: "Legend of the Melonheads" is Moderately Successful
bluequiet29 October 2011
If, while feeling a little spunky, you have ever picked up one of "The Asylum" films (i.e. The Day the Earth Stopped), you should understand that there are a lot of different films out there. Independent, and low budget, films can be a different species, and with that difference comes the fact that not all movies can be judged on the same perspective.

"Legend of the Melonheads" is actually a pretty fun film if you go into it with the thinking of an "Asylum" film in terms of quality and acting. However, there is a lot more love and creativity in this film than that of an Asylum film (I hate to keep bringing them up, I'm just using them as a point of reference). As a result, I take this movie as a big step upward compared to Asylum films.

I'm also from around the area that this film was made, and I am familiar with most of the stuff they talk about in the film, so there was an added kick of that for me. There are even points where the acting actually hits a pretty natural tone and the kids, and the older adults, actually do some acting that you can't complain much about. But those portions are short, so keep that in mind while you watch the film.

There's some good humor, there is some twisted scenes worthy of any shock horror film, and there were some decent jump scares. Hard core Horror fans, who enjoy the "Basketcase" schlock horror type movies as much as the "Let the Right One In" critically acclaimed horror type movies, should get something out of the film. And fans like that who live in the Northeastern Ohio area should really enjoy this film. I recommend it.

I give it a 6.5 out of 10 for its kind of film. However on a more strict scale, which I think IMDb should be, I can only give it up to a 4.
