Season Four Review
southdavid22 January 2024
After season three concluded, the Venture Brothers release schedule starts to get a bit weird. This fourth season was in fact split in two halves, with 8 episodes in each and a year between them. The next two years we'd only get two special episodes to keep us going.

All change in this season. Brock Sampson (Patrick Warburton) joins S. P. H. I. N. X, another agency based (secretly) out of a warehouse in the Venture compound. Sargent Hatred (Chris McCulloch). Hank (Chris McCulloch) and Dean (Michael Sinterniklaas) are approaching the end of their home-schooling years and go for work experience roles, with a memorable prom planned for the end of the year. 21 (Doc Hammer) has toughened up and is now an elite soldier in The Monarch's (Chris McCulloch) army, but continues to look for 24's (Chris McCulloch) killer and talks to his skull.

We're deep into the lore episodes now, and learning that unlike other animated shows, "The Venture Brothers" is willing to make permanent changes to the characters and their situations. Brock's movement from being the Venture's bodyguard is made permanent, with Sgt. Hatred taking his place. 21 undergoes his character change, and though they manage to extend the chats between him and 24, one of my favourite aspects of the series so far, even that eventually comes to an end.

There's a bit more playing with the form this season two, with two episodes "Everybody comes to Hanks" and "Bright Lights, Dean City" taking place concurrently. The first of those two, an amazing noir parody is one of my all-time favourite episodes, with all of Hank's dialogue being solid gold. It also reveals to us the truth behind one of the shows earliest mysteries, the parentage of Dermott. The episode "The Revenge Society" is another that provides some deep lore, whilst again coating it in hilarious dialogue from Red Mantle and Dragoon, who are grafted into one body.

From here on out, things are going to get a bit patchier for me, as I've seen some more of what comes, but perhaps only once, whereas I had the DVD's for the shows so far, and had watched them multiple times. Really looking forward to it.
