Wonderful Animated Version
3 April 2013 | by (Xanadu) – See all my reviews

This is the Air Pictures International version that was broadcast on CBS' Famous Classic Tales series, at Thanksgiving and other holidays. It's a fine adaptation that follows the central plot thread of the Scott novel, the capture and escape of Cedric, Ivanhoe, Rowena and Rebecca, and the subsequent defeat of Dubois Gilbert. 47 minutes makes it hard to bring all of the elements to the screen, but the Australian studio hits the high points, while presenting character detail that was typical of mid-70s animation. It's not as lush as Disney, but it serves the story well. There is a later version, from another Australian studio (Burbank Films), but this is the superior one. API worked with and became part of Hanna-Barbera, producing many of their Famous Classic Tales installments and several of their Saturday morning programs. If you can find it on video, grab it, as only the Burbank version seems to be available.
