‘Conan the Barbarian’ at 35: How Darth Vader Helped Arnold Schwarzenegger Beat the Muscle Man Stereotype

13 May 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s films have grossed $1.9 billion in North America. Among his classics are James Cameron’s 1984’s “The Terminator”; 1991’s “The Terminator 2: Judgment Day”; and 1994’s “True Lies,” as well as such hits as 1987’s “Predator” and 2012’s “The Expendables 2.”

His movie catch phrases such as “I’ll be back”; “Hasta la Vista, Baby”; and “Get to the chopper” have become part of the pop culture lexicon.

Schwarzenegger even served as the Governor of California from 2003 to 2011. And has recently has gone mano y mano in a Twitter feud with President Trump. Guess who won?

But would he have been as big a star — let alone as governor — without his breakout role in John Milius’ “Conan the Barbarian”? The violent, erotic R-rated sword-and-fantasy adventure based on the stories of 1930’s pulp fiction writer Robert E. Howard opened in 1,400 theaters on May 14, 1982. Though reviews were decidedly mixed — Variety »

Dave Bautista, Sylvester Stallone, Luc Besson titles get UK deals

9 May 2017 6:01 AM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Exclusive: Signature inks deals with Sierra, Europacorp, more.

UK distributor Signature Entertainment has snapped up a raft of Us and international titles including Sylvester Stallone and Dave Bautista action-thriller Escape Plan 2: Hades from Highland.

The sequel to the 2013 Arnie/Stallone action title, which grossed $140m worldwide, is currently in production and set for release in 2018.

In Hades, Stallone’s character Ray Breslin is called on to organize another for-hire security force but when one of his team, the wing chun master Shu (Xiaoming Huang), goes missing – inside a computerized techno-terror battle-maze known as Haze, where human combatants brawl like beasts – Breslin goes back into the secret lock-up to save his friend.

Bautista co-stars as a deadly acquaintance of Breslin’s alongside Jaime King, Jesse Metcalfe and 50 Cent.

From Europacorp the company has picked up heist thriller Renegades, co-written by filmmake-producer Luc Besson and The Magnificent 7 and The Expendables 2 writer Richard Wenk.

Consider With Reservations: The Stars of Quantity Over Quality Cinema

20 April 2017 12:51 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The stars of yesterday now are making three films a year you never knew existed until they show up on Netflix.^ Real Movie ^

In my prior life as a script reader, I certainly read a lot of bad scripts, but at times, an even more common occurrence was a script that seemed to do a great many things right, but somehow fell just short of being something you wanted to champion as a movie. As draining as the terrible scripts were, there’s something pure about clear-cut bad. It takes little effort to explain why they’re unfit.

The real challenges were the scripts that had kind of a decent premise, kind of an okay twist or two, and a lead character who wasn’t bad so much as he or she was just… there. The raw materials are there for what Could be a script. They just happen to be assembled in the least compelling way »

Schwarzenegger Won't Do Expendables 4 Without Stallone

5 April 2017 11:27 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The troubles continue for The Expendables 4. Recently, it was announced that franchise star and creator Sylvester Stallone departed the fourth installment, but the project is reportedly going to be moving ahead without him. If that is indeed the case, then The Expendables 4 is also going to have to press on without Arnold Schwarzenegger as well.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with the actor, who has been in all three previous Expendables movies and is good friends with Sylvester Stallone. It turns out, if Stallone isn't going to be involved, Arnold Schwarzenegger wants absolutely no part of The Expendables 4. Here is what he had to say about it.

"There is no Expendables without Sly. I would never do the movie without him, no."

With Sylvester Stallone, who directed and co-write the first Expendables, in addition to co-writing the other two installments, leaving the project was already going to be a lot to overcome. »

Stallone Exits Expendables 4, What Does This Mean for the Franchise?

31 March 2017 2:34 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Sylvester Stallone is now leaving the Expendables franchise he helped create, backing away from starring in Expendables 4, despite what would reportedly be the biggest payday of his career. Sources claim that the actor would take in a whopping $20 million for starring in Expendables 4, which we had reported in December would be the final sequel in this action-packed franchise. Still, producer Avi Lerner revealed that he doesn't think Sylvester Stallone is leaving quite yet, so there may still be hope for the actor's return.

Deadline reports that Sylvester Stallone and producer Avi Lerner, whose Nu Image/Millennium company has produced and financed all of the Expendables movies, can't find common ground on the script or who will take over as the new director. Another point of contention is the use of Avi Lerner's own VFX house, the Bulgaria-based Nu Boyana, with Sylvester Stallone reportedly worried about the "underwhelming" results of this franchise. »

The 24 hottest projects at this year's Hong Kong Filmart

13 March 2017 3:24 AM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

There is a thrilling selection of Chinese-language titles at Filmart this year. Liz Shackleton picks out some of the most promising.

With very few Hong Kong or mainland Chinese sellers making the journey to this year’s European Film Market in Berlin, Filmart offers a chance for buyers to catch up with the Chinese-language titles that will be rolled out in the region for the rest of the year.

After serving up the biggest film of the Chinese New Year holiday — Kung Fu Yoga, starring Jackie Chan and directed by Stanley Tong — China’s Sparkle Roll Media has launched a Hong Kong-based sales arm that is selling Ding Sheng’s reboot of the A Better Tomorrow series.

Other high-profile action titles new to market include Distribution Workshop’s Extraordinary Mission, from the creative teams behind the Infernal Affairs and Overheard series, and Huayi Brothers’ crime drama Explosion, starring Duan Yihong.

Don’t Kill It, 2016.

Directed by Mike Mendez.

Starring Dolph LundgrenKristina Klebe, and Billy Slaughter.

Synopsis:

An ancient evil is unleashed in a small Alaskan town leaving a trail of death and destruction as it passes from host to host. The only hope of survival lies with a grizzled demon hunter (Dolph Lundgren) who has faced this terror before. Together with a reluctant FBI agent he has to figure out how to destroy a demon with the ability to possess its killer.

As a fully fledged member of the Dolph Lundgren appreciation society, the arrival of a new Lundgren special is a bitter-sweet experience these days. I say these days, it’s probably always been that way, but in the last five years in particular it’s a real crap shoot. He’s now firing out films with the regularity of Eric Roberts. Maybe not quite Eric level yet, »

John Wick 2 Director Talks Creating the Perfect Sequel | Exclusive

7 February 2017 11:44 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

John Wick is a movie that seemingly came out of nowhere in 2014 and took everyone by surprise. It had been a long time since anyone had seen an action movie of that caliber grace the big screen and there were a lot of elements that made it work. For one, it had been years since audiences saw Keanu Reeves do anything like this, and it is very clear that this is right in his wheelhouse. But perhaps the real thing that makes John Wick, and the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 2 so great is director Chad Stahelski.

As a man who has been working as a second-unit director and stuntman in the industry for more than two decades, he understands action and how to execute it. That is why Lionsgate's John Wick was the perfect vehicle for him to jump into the world of directing and why John Wick: Chapter 2 »

Veteran Hollywood executive Mark Gill is exiting the presidency of Avi Lerner’s Millennium Films after six years in the post.

Lerner and Trevor Short will continue to operate Millennium, which was launched in 1996 as a subsidiary of Nu Image.

The most successful Millennium titles during Gill’s tenure included “The Expendables 2” and “The Expendables 3,” which combined for $530 million in worldwide grosses, along with Gerard Butler’s “Olympus Has Fallen” and “London Has Fallen” which took in more than $370 million. Arnold Schwarzenegger, A Career In Crisis: Why the ’80s Action Icon Can’t Mount a Comeback

26 January 2017 8:30 AM, PST | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

This can’t be what Arnold Schwarzenegger imagined 2017 to look like: Sure, there’s a reality star in the White House, the Chicago Cubs are World Series champions, and his arch-rival (/best celebrity friend), Sylvester Stallone, is a recent Academy Award nominee. Yet for the ex-governor of California, far more confounding is how he became an ex-celebrity.

Schwarzenegger spent his acting life amassing a domestic box office of more than $1.8 billion. That haul came from comedies, like “Twins” ($111 million); science fiction, like “Total Recall” ($119 million) and “Terminator 2” ($204 million); or — his bread and butter — action flicks a la “True Lies” ($146 million) and “Eraser” ($101 million). But one unfortunate connection for all of Schwarzenegger’s films grossing $100 million-plus: They were all made before the year 2000.

Since the dawn of the new millennium, Schwarzenegger’s name above the title has carried less weight at the box office, resulting in drastically lower figures. How he »

The Death of Good Screenwriting in Hollywood

Tom Jolliffe on the death of good screenwriting in Hollywood…

Awards season is in full swing, so it seems somewhat ironic to come and bemoan the dearth of good screenwriting within the modern studio system, but I’m going to anyway. Putting aside the award nominated films, my focus is more on those films that are more financially motivated or targeted toward genre fans. Let’s face it, La La Land, whilst it won’t redefine screenwriting, is going to be hard to pick apart. There is still good work out there, but it’s fewer and far between, and those films where the returns matter above all else, seem to be becoming increasingly more and more dumbed down. It seems like writers now get hired to write any old guff and the quality of the final draft is of no consequence.

The first subject of my ire is Avi Lerner, »

The fourth and final movie in The Expendables series, cunningly going by the title of The Expendables 4 so far, is expected to see many familiar faces return. It’s a fair bet that alongside Sylvester Stallone will be Dolph Lundgren, The Statham and Arnold Schwarzenegger for a start. But also comes a report that suggests Jean-Claude Van Damme is returning to the series.
