When Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth), the newest member of the elite mercenary team known as the Expendables, is brutally killed by ruthless rival mercenary Jean Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme) while on a supposedly simple mission to retrieve the contents of a safe from a downed airplane in Albania, the rest of the team -- leader Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), knife specialist Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), demolitionist Toll Road (Randy Couture), and sniper Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren) -- vow revenge on Vilain, not knowing that he is also after the safe's contents.

The Expendables 2 is the second movie in the Expendables franchise, a series of tribute movies to action films and actors from the 1980s and 90s. The screenplay was written by principle actor Sylvester Stallone and screenwriter Richard Wenk. It followed The Expendables (2010) and was followed by The Expendables 3 (2014). The Expendables 4 is in the works, but no release date has been set.

According to Maggie, it's a device that shows the location of five tons of weapons-grade plutonium, enough to seriously disrupt the balance of world power, stored in a mine by the Soviet Union after the Cold War.

Bruce Willis is back as Mr Church, the CIA agent who sends the Expendables on the mission. He also assigns specialist Maggie Chan (Nan Yu) to accompany the team. Arnold Schwarzenegger as rival mercenary Trench appears in several places during the film, and Chuck Norris is introduced as Ross' mercenary friend, 'Lone Wolf' Booker.

Having run out of bullets, Vilain tosses away his weapons and asks Ross whether he wants to kill him 'like men or like sheep.' Ross discards his weapons as well, and the two go at each other mano a mano.Ultimately, Ross kills Vilain by backing him into a rotating propellor but not before telling him that the boy he killed was named Billy. When Ross meets up with Church and Trench at the airport, he shows them a bag dripping blood (presumably from Vilain's head) to prove that Vilain is no longer interested in the plutonium. Maggie offers to stay with Ross, but he declines on grounds that he would be bad luck for her. Ross escorts the three to their waiting helicopter and is surprised to see Booker seated inside. Booker agrees that he is still the lone wolf but admits that sometimes it's fun to run with the pack. Just before they take off, Church presents Ross with an airplane to replace the Albatross that crashed into the mine. Meanwhile in Paris, Billy's girlfriend Sophia (Nikolette Noel) discovers on her doorstep a box containing a large sum of money and Billy's letter. In the final scene, the Expendables drink a toast to Billy as they fly off in their plane.
