Trivia

During the party scene, a grey pegasus pony with straw-colored hair is standing in the background. Initially her face is obscured, but after Twilight finishes pouring herself hot-sauce, the background pony's entire face is visible, and she's making an odd face with her nose scrunched and her eyes crossed. This pony was eventually popularized by fans and named Derpy Hooves. See more »

Narrator: Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there were two regal sisters who ruled together and created harmony for all the land. Fairly Good
12 February 2013 | by See all my reviews

Overall this is an average episode. The basic plot is Twilight Sparkle must learn what the elements of harmony are to stop a possible attack by Nightmare Moon. The introductions to the "mane" characters was effective and short. The plot was interesting and well developed. Many future fan favorite characters were present. But there were some issues with this episode. The writers and actors were not used to the characters yet; this is most apparent with Rainbow Dash and spike. The story of Nightmare Moon also needs to be more developed. We need to know more about her motive. Yet overall this episode was fairly good.
