A healer is in Camelot using magic to heal the sick, and Gaius quickly realizes it is Alice, a woman whom he was about to marry many years earlier until she had to flee from Uther's persecution of sorcerers. Now Gaius is happy to work with Alice again in preparing potions, but he is unaware that Alice is being controlled by a mythical monster, a manticore, which urges her to poison the cold-hearted king. To break the manticore's hold over Alice and ultimately save her from execution, Gaius has to perform the magic that he possessed but had forsaken long ago. Written by don @ minifie-1

Did You Know?

When Gaius is talking to Alice about poisoning Uther, Arthur's red shirt can be seen through the gaps in the door behind him, waiting for his cue to burst in and arrest her. See more »

Merlin: Did you go out last night?
Gaius: Yes. I had to get some herbs.
Merlin: Herbs?
Gaius: A... A new supplier, just arrived.
Merlin: Right. Do your suppliers normally kiss you?
Gaius: You followed me! How dare you?
Merlin: Gaius, it was the middle of the night. I was worried. I thought you might be in some sort of trouble.
Gaius: There's nothing wrong.
Merlin: What's her name?
Gaius: Alice. She's an old friend. Well, more than a friend, if truth be told.

Speaks to the ability of a star to overcome plot issues
23 September 2014 | by (North America) – See all my reviews

Enter stage right, Pauline Collins of Shirley Valentine fame, in one of the worst scripts the series has ever seen, something about a former refugee from Camelot (she left during the Purge, she was a healer who used magic) who returns under the "thrall" of a creature she mistakenly summoned, and is now compelled to do its bidding.

Which bidding is to kill Uthor. (This is never explained) Seriously, the script is so bad that three minutes from the close they had to have the actress playing the healer (Collins) actually speak dialog that provides the missing backstory about how she first got under the thrall of the creature. (In other words, the story makes no sense until the last three minutes; and even then there are other remaining plot holes you could drive a truck through) The good news? The presence of Collins makes all this painless and fairly entertaining nonetheless. Nothing beats "star power."
