Gary Cole, Kevin Dunn
Veep, Season 2, Episode 9: “Running”
Written by Sean Gray and Will Smith
Directed by Tim Kirkby
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on HBO
Selina admitting knowledge of the CIA spy last week came at the heels of a season-long campaign where she has ended up on the losing end of most political matters without having any say in the decision. Becoming the public face of accountability for atleast one of the government’s scandals thus gave her the ability to control the narrative in atleast one situation. The season’s penultimate episode this week sees Selina try to take further control of her political career as she realises her role in the current administration, in an episode that continues to be funny while still managing to effectively move the characters forward.
Watching Selina articulate a level of self-awareness regarding the downward turn her career was taking, »

Selina Meyer, the vice-president of the United States, is brusque, myopic, dismissive, self-centered, easily distracted, and quickly offended, and to a degree that often causes her to miss the policy forest because she's fixated on the political trees. She is, by all accounts, an unlikable character. But the way Julia Louis-Dreyfus portrays Selina (with a hat tip to the writing of Veep creator Armando Iannucci and his creative team), the character is, improbably, immensely appealing: Meyer may be a little monster of egocentrism, but the actress plays her without ego.Like the co-stars that orbit her like asteroids around a volatile sun, Louis-Dreyfus makes Meyer seem so life-size. We don't look at her and think only, "what an idiot" or "what a horrible person" (though we do think such things — that's part of the fun of this scathing comedy). We also think, "Yeah, that's probably how I'd behave under such »

Steve Coogan has appeared on our screens, both big and small, in many guises over the years, but absolutely nothing the comedian has created comes close to Alan Partridge - one-time chat show host, erstwhile radio broadcaster, perennial Abba aficianado and now star of his own cinematic extravaganza. Coogan again teams up with the hugely talented writing partners Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It, In The Loop, Veep), Patrick Marber and Peter Baynham, together with Neil and Rob Gibbons - all of whom have written for Partridge in the past - with TV comedy veteran Declan Lowney (Father Ted, Little Britain) handling directorial duties.Plot-wise, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa sees the staff of North Norfolk Digital radio under siege, when disgruntled fellow DJ Colm Meaney is unceremoniously...

While "The World's End" may be the most anticipated Brit-com of the summer by quite some distance, there's at least one other laugher landing before the weather cools that could be worth the price of admission; the big-screen debut of Alan Partridge. There's been talk of bringing Steve Coogan's most seminal creation, a low-rent talk show host turned regional radio DJ, who featured in the series "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and "I'm Alan Partridge," to the big screen for quite some time, but shooting finally got underway earlier this year for an August release date, and after a brief tease earlier in the year, a full trailer has arrived over at MSN for "Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa." As reported earlier, the script (co-written by Coogan, Partridge vets Neil & Rob Gibbons, "Veep" creator Armando Iannucci and "Borat" Oscar-nominee Peter Baynham, sees Alan become involved in a siege at his radio »

We have another L.A. Film Fest exclusive this week, in advance of the festival's kick off on Thursday with Pedro Almodovar's "I'm So Excited." We've already seen a teaser from the doc "Levitated Mass" and a clip from the drama "Winter In The Blood," and today we've got a fierce and funny firefight against... dogs? Don't worry, it's only an imagined one and it comes from the mind of young Oliver, a struggling actor practicing a monologue against the background soundtrack of his dog-sitting charges, from the narrative competition entry "Four Dogs." Oliver (Oliver Cooper) is a struggling Los Angeles actor, making ends meet by dog-sitting for his aunt and passing his time practicing his acting and hanging with his acting class buddy Dan (Dan Bakkedahl, you know him as the particularly unctuous Roger Furlong on "Veep"). The quirky comedy is directed by Joe Burke and written and produced by Burke and Cooper, »

Another year, another awards show. I hope you tuned in to the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, because it was a pretty fantastic event. Again, not all of my votes ended up for the winners, and a few of them seem a little questionable to me, but that’s the nature of the beast.
I’m curious where you fit in though. Did the right shows win? Were the right shows even nominated? There were some surprises, like Orphan Black taking home a prize, and there were some obvious choices as well. How’s the mix work for you? By the way, the surprise is only by way of it being a small show with a sci-fi angle, not because it didn’t deserve the win. I mean, that’s a different question…

It’s finally official, creator Dan Harmon will return to manage the fifth season of Community.
In talking with Vulture Guillermo Diaz says the cast of Scandal doesn’t take their show’s twists and turns any better than the audience does, “We’re constantly like, ‘Oh my God! This is really happening!’ We all look at each other, and we all look at (Scandal producer) Shonda (Rhimes), and she’s like, ‘Yep.’ She kind of shrugs like, Yeah. I know.”
Don’t worry, Diaz also discuses Huck‘s wig.
Fox has picked a new producer for American Idol, hiring a producer who recently managed the Swedish version of Idol.

With Selina’s growing political issues in the second season of Veep, from the CIA operative hostage situation, to the scandals involving her ex-husband, a rough meeting between the Vice president and the press seemed inevitable. While Meyer was able to avoid the press in Finland, despite Dan’s bumbling efforts, such reprieve could not go on for long. This episode sees Meyer face the press, in an episode that illustrates how Meyer’s recent political actions are being viewed by those in the public eye, while still managing to be comedically top-notch.
