Melissa McCarthy: why Hollywood’s first lady of funny is hit and miss

30 May 2016 1:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

When she’s working with Paul Feig she’s a scream. But as her new film The Boss proves, other directors aren’t so lucky

What’s not to love about Melissa McCarthy? She’s a superstar in a comedy universe dominated by boys’ clubs and sylphs, and she’s funny as hell. She stole Bridesmaids, and Judd Apatow’s This Is 40, with a bracingly foul-mouthed cameo. And now she has four box-office hits under her belt, a near-unbroken run from Identity Thief through to The Boss.

Jesse Peretz Directing ‘Juliet, Naked’ for Judd Apatow

6 May 2016 11:54 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Our Idiot Brother” director Jesse Peretz will helm the independent romance “Juliet, Naked,” based on the novel by Nick Hornby.

“Juliet, Naked” centers on Annie, the long-suffering girlfriend of Duncan, and her unlikely transatlantic romance with once revered singer-songwriter Tucker Crowe, who also happens to be the subject of Duncan’s musical obsession.

Los Angeles Media Fund (Lamf) is financing the picture. Judd Apatow, and the team of Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa, Barry Mendel and Jeffrey Soros are producing. Simon Horsman is an executive producer.

The script was written by Tamara Jenkins (‘The Savages”) and Jim Taylor (“Sideways, “About Schmidt”) with revisions by Phil Alden Robinson and Evgenia Peretz.

CAA and UTA set up “Juliet, Naked” and are co-repping the rights.

Jesse Peretz directed nine episodes of Lena Dunham’s “Girls” and five eps of Zooey Deschanel’s “New Girl.”

Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon Reenact a Styx Classic (Video)

30 April 2016 11:52 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Is it any wonder that Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon would turn to Styx for inspiration? “Tonight Show” host Fallon and “This Is 40” star Rudd slapped on the jumpsuits and period wigs to pay twisted homage to Tommy Shaw, Dennis DeYoung and company with a reenactment of the group’s 1981 music video for “Too Much Time on My Hands.” Rudd and Fallon do a masterful job of capturing the magic, re-creating every dramatic hand gesture, over-the-top facial expression and theatrical strum of a ringing guitar chord. Sisters DVD Review

Sisters DVD Review by Dan Bullock

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are two of a very unique kind on the comedy circuit: original, funny and effortless in their work. Sisters seems like a perfect platform for their talents and, happily, it’s rather excellent. Written by Paula Pell (a long-time writer on SNL) and directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), there’s a fine ensemble cast and crew who are moulded together to create something unpredictably refreshing.

Fey and Poehler play two sisters who, in character, are poles apart with Fey particularly taking on a very different role to the one we know in 30 Rock. She plays Kate Ellis, a single Mum who’s the outlandish sibling taking on life with little thought about consequence and lives place-to-place i.e. wherever someone will offer her a sofa. Poehler is Maura, more organised, tidy and you get the drift. There’s »

Melissa McCarthy's 'The Boss' Narrowly Tops 'Batman v Superman' for Weekend #1

10 April 2016 7:20 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Melissa McCarthy's The Boss and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are in a tight race for the weekend number one with a mere $45,000 giving the edge to The Boss based on estimates. Also opening this weekend, Stx's Hardcore Henry fell short of expectations while Fox Searchlight's Demolition was all-too-apt a name for the Jake Gyllenhaal starrer as it managed to barely creep over a $1 million opening. Beginning with The Boss, its #1 finish is secondary to the proven star power of Melissa McCarthy as she top-lines yet another $20+ million opener. Excluding the limited release of St. Vincent and her small appearance in This is 40, McCarthy's streak of starring in a film that has grossed over $20 million in its opening weekend has now been extended to six, going back to 2011's Bridesmaids. Not even the overwhelmingly negative reviews or lackluster "C+" CinemaScore could prevent The Boss from posting a $23.48 million weekend, »

Movie Review: McCarthy's Talents Not Enough to Rescue Latest Limp Comedy

8 April 2016 2:07 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

'The Boss' movie: Melissa McCarthy funny only with certain directors, the right material. 'The Boss' movie review: Melissa McCarthy founders in husband Ben Falcone's 'limp comedy' At this point no one would dispute that Melissa McCarthy is one of the funniest people on the planet. However, after the limp comedies Tammy and now The Boss, there is something else not in dispute: Melissa McCarthy is funny only with certain filmmakers and with scripts that would work even without the benefit of her gifts. One can imagine Bridesmaids and Spy being perfectly fine comedies had someone been cast other than McCarthy. Add her physicality, ad-lib abilities, and razor-sharp timing and you've got two films that were among the funniest of their respective years (McCarthy even earned a well-deserved Oscar nod for Bridesmaids). The Boss is McCarthy's second film directed by Ben Falcone. The first was Tammy which, »

10 Cloverfield Lane – The Review

So, when is a sequel not technically a sequel? This new film offers a crafty spin on a Hollywood staple. Let’s see, we’re now well aware of the prequel, a follow-up to a hit film usually made when the original seems to complete the story. Actually one of the stars of this flick was in one such prequel a couple of years ago, dealing with the events that occur immediately prior to the 1982 horror/Sf classic The Thing (also shared the same title). There have also been the spin-off flick in which supporting characters have taken center stage in a new tale. This Is 40 featured the third and fourth leads from Knocked Up. Just last year we had Minions, which was a spin-off and a prequel to the Despicable Me movies. Now we have a film that could be a new category, we might say that it »

Love Season 1 Review

17 February 2016 10:38 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

All episodes were provided prior to broadcast.

Of all the critiques one could level at Judd Apatow, a particularly commonplace complaint is that the guy just doesn’t know when to cut. From his directorial ventures (especially Funny People and This is 40) to projects that merely bear his mark (like The Five-Year Engagement and Get Him to the Greek), Apatow joints are near-chronically overlong and digressive.

At this point, he’s no doubt aware of such criticism. And with the unveiling of Love, a 10-episode Netflix series that he both created (alongside Girls‘ Lesley Arfin and star Paul Rust) and exec-produced (with Arfin, Rust, Dean Holland, and Brent Forrester), it appears that his response to it is of the middle-finger-salute variety.

With episode lengths ranging from 30 minutes to more than 45 (in the unfortunately exhausting pilot), and a full season to just begin telling the story of how two people »

How To Be Single – The Review

11 February 2016 10:36 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Okay fellow film fans, are we ready for another flick attempting to replicate the Bridesmaids box office bonanza? Hollywood has been frantically trying to clone that hit since it astounded the nay-sayers nearly five years ago. Back then none of the studio chiefs believed that audiences would flock to an “R” rated comedy that primarily focused on a group of woman (and mostly TV actresses at that!). Its success turned supporting player Melissa McCarthy into an “above the title” film star who headlines at one major comedy each year (she’s nearly a film franchise on her own). Now the execs want to tap into a slightly younger market, maybe the Rogen/Franco/Hill late 20’s crowd, but just a tad older than That Awkward Moment. And they’re banking on one of the minor Bridesmaids players, the Aussie firecracker that stole scenes from lead Kristen Wiig, Rebel Wilson, who »

Megan Fox Arrives in 'New Girl' Season 5 Trailer

4 February 2016 9:26 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in September, Fox announced that their hit sitcom New Girl will be getting a new roommate, with Megan Fox signing on for a multi-episode guest starring arc in the show. We got our first brief glimpse at the actress in a trailer that surfaced in December, but Entertainment Weekly has debuted a new trailer and photos from next week's episode, Reagan, airing Tuesday, February 9, with even more footage of the guest star. This trailer reveals that the actress' character, Reagan, has a history with Cece (Hannah Simone), who both "hooked up" at the MTV Beach House.

The casting move was made after Zooey Deschanel had a baby in real life, causing her to be absent from the show, leading to Megan Fox being cast. Her character Reagan will debut in next week's episode, and is described as a straight-shooting pharmaceutical sales rep, who comes to town on business and rents out Jess' room, »
