The Start of the Story

Great acting in this origin story to the VC Andrews novels. The overall ratings seem low but you really need to be a fan of the novels and movies to understand why this origin is a good introduction to the characters. The stories are 40 years old now but still stand the test of time. While many say Mac Irons acting is stiff, I wonder if that is not his take on Malcolm. Malcolm was a cold hearted snake in the grass in all the stories and I don't think humanizing him is even needed - the man really had no redeeming qualities.

Part 1 (The Marriage)

Olivia Winfield, an independent, spinster, co-owns a successful business with her rich father. But she is looking for love and is intrigued when her father is visited by Malcolm Foxworth, who courts her, and they get married. She becomes the Mistress of Foxworth Hall, a huge estate. Unfortunately, she also becomes nothing more than a replacement for Malcolm's mother who disappeared without a trace. He treats Olivia like a trophy wife with no love between them and gives her the run of the place with all the dark secrets within its walls. Starring British actors Jemima Rooper and Max Irons, and filmed on location in Romania, with breathtaking scenery, I enjoyed this and can't wait for Part II! Highly recommended!!!
