The writer of The Reaper Man also served as the director, cinematographer, grip, editor and executive producer of the film. The only crew he could afford to hire was a makeup artist and a producer. The producer, Taylor Gilliland, had to act in the film due to an actress being a no-show during production.
Due to the movie's low budget, the director was only allowed to visit the locations where the scenes were filmed an hour before call time. He would overcome this obstacle by generalizing the blocking of each scene and altering it to fit the location once on set.
Although the director's father passed away while the movie was in production, no scenes were rescheduled and the movie wrapped after three more shooting days.
The director came up with the idea of The Reaper Man after noticing the lack of black horror characters in the genre.
The Reaper Man was the second movie filmed during the summer of 2022 by the writer and director, Jaron Lockridge. He premiered this movie along with another movie he produced, Succuba, to a sold out audience in Memphis, Tennessee on Halloween 2022. He called the event The Halloween Double Feature being one of the rare times a director premiered two feature films produced in the same year. He rented a screening room in the theater for the event which is also known as four-walling.
