Former soldier and policeman, Jackson Brodie, becomes a private investigator.
Not quite as depressing as watching a Wallander, but near enough. A mixture of depressing stories populated with depressing people with depressing endings, investigated by a detective with a very good reason for being depressed. So many images of cars being driven across stunning landscapes with the sky featuring prominently in shot that you're sure the director studied Wallander before filming. Ditto the flashbacks in not quite black and white.
What is it about UK television these days that they seem to be populated with depressed investigators? The following immediately come to mind: this one, Wallander (admittedly Swedish in origin), The Last Detective, Dalziel and particularly his mate Pascoe, and even Morse and Lewis when it comes down to it.
Worth watching but as someone else here said, "missable". Just hide the sharp knives and the alcohol before viewing.
