Keith Murdoch was a noted journalist who visited Gallipoli. He is noted for the report (known as the Gallipoli Letter) that he wrote to Andrew Fisher, the Australian Prime Minister, and Herbert Asquith, the British Prime Minister, in which he was critical of the whole campaign.
At Gallipoli, a man wearing a red cross is seen leading a donkey. This is a representation of the Australia war hero, John Simpson Kirkpatrick. Simpson was famed for ferrying wounded soldiers back from the front lines on a donkey. 'Simpson and his donkey' were celebrated as heroes of the campaign.
