Emmy And Oscar-Nominated Documentaries

11 July 2013 5:08 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The eligibility of documentaries for awardage from both that lusted after winged woman (Emmy) and the coveted naked man (Oscar) is a labyrinthine maze from which we would never exit were we to foolishly enter. In fact, someone needs to make a documentary about That to sort it all out. Documentaries leave strange crumbs all over both the big and small screens on their long walking journey through often complicated and extremely protacted "releases".

I bring this up because a portion of the Emmy nominations were announced today (like The Grammys there are hundreds of categories) in the non-fiction fields of news and documentary. I was surprised, for example, to see Semper Fi: Always Faithful, The Loving Story and We Were Here as nominees. You may recall they were all Oscar finalists (though not nominees) back in 2011 and now they're up for 2013 Emmys! Actual nominees from that Oscar year show up too, »

Morning Brew - Wed. June 26: Heather Locklear and Jane Seymour make out on "Franklin & Bash," Russell Brand likes to "test" lesbians

Good Morning! It really is an awesome morning with the striking down of Doma as unconstitutional and saying "Peace out, Prop 8!" I'm feeling all:

Turn on Logo for the latest on all these Supreme Court rulings.

Russell Brand was talking about out lesbian presenter Clare Balding on a radio show in the UK when he said he likes to help "test" lesbians.

I just do that with lesbians, like "come on, you’re not that lesbian. For heaven’s sake, you’re just being difficult now." She’s in a happy relationship, isn’t she? I won’t rest, until every lesbian relationship in Britain has been disrupted by an unwelcome boorish Essex boy.

I'm so sure that all the lesbians in the land are like "I guess I could try it with this loud, hairy British man."

Good morning!

The New York Times wonders if lesbian sex in literature and film is ever really that realistic. The writer finds that we're usually exploited.

The Australian interviewed Gigi Chao, who still loves her dad despite his trying to sell her to a man that could turn her straight. An excerpt:

I don't think you can be certain that homosexuality is something you are born with. I am more of the scientific point of view that sexuality and sexual identity are something that evolves. It is more of a fluid thing. It is like those fish that can change their gender on a whim. I think there is a fluidity in human sexual identity that can be affected by experiences in life. The 'born this way' argument is for Lady Gaga; I suppose it »

Good morning!

Sarah Paulson attended the after-party for Trust Me at the Tribeca Film Festival with Amanda Peet and Felicity Huffman.

The next night she was at the screening of Mud.

Also at Tribeca, Evan Rachel Wood for the premiere of A Case of You.

Out Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobson was part of a panel on Women in Film at Cinema Con over the weekend. When she was asked about the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation and if it was "the best or worst thing" to happen to women, she replied, "Female desire is a very complex subject." Snaps! Nina also accepted the Fandango Fan Choice Award for the movie Hunger Games.

A site called Business2Community has some ideas on how Lgbt consumers can best be reached. I hope Chik-Fil-a is paying attention.

Good morning!

Katee Sackhoff talked with Collider about her bisexual psycho role in Sexy Evil Genius. She was asked if her character is actually crazy or just really good at manipulating her exes:

Isn’t that the question, though? Some of the craziest people I’ve met, in my life, are some of the most brilliant people I’ve met. It’s almost as if they get bored in their own brain and they have to come up with this craziness to stay interested in life. So, I don’t know. I still don’t know. I think that’s up to the viewer. I think there’s probably little bits of both inside of her, for sure.

You can find Sexy Evil Genius on DVD, digital download or VOD.

The 24th Annual GLAAD Awards was held at the Marriott Marquis in New York City this past Saturday. This year, considerable buzz led up to the event, as the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna, was scheduled to make an appearance. She greeted the crowd with her trademark brashness and saucy humor.

Taking the stage in a Boy Scout uniform, pop icon Madonna called for the Boy Scouts to lift its ban on gays. “I think [the Boy Scouts] should change their stupid rules,” she said. She also called for an end to Lgbt bullying, spoke out in defense of imprisoned band Pussy Riot, and called for open dialogue between ideological opposites to end discrimination. Finally, she presented the Vito Russo award to Anderson Cooper. Calling him a “freedom fighter” and “a bad ass motherfucker,” she invited Cooper onstage so she could “grab [his] ass. »
