Hannah Waterman's last appearance on New Tricks
safenoe15 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Hannah Waterman's is credited in this episode of New Tricks according to IMDb, but she doesn't appear, and she's not listed in the credits on screen. When I reflect on New Tricks, it's a shame it didn't longer than it did following the departures of James Bolam in season 9 and Alun Armstrong and Amanda Redman in season 10, and then Dennis Waterman in season 12.

Rupert Graves appears, and I remember him in the first episode of Death in Paradise. I'm most impressed by the London apartment featured in this episode. I sometimes wish Danny Dyer had made a guest appearance in New Tricks, but he ended up in Eastenders.

Bernie Madoff and the Ponzi scheme is referred to in this episode. Talking about Ponzi, one thing I don't think I've never noticed in New Tricks is the UCOS gang dining on pizza. Pizza is very popular in London. Also curiously you rarely see the UCOS gang eating at a carvery feasting on black pudding and so on. Mostly pubs though.

The ending is rather gruesome, with one of the characters committing suicide in front of Gerry.

Worth watching for the ending.

Gerry is asked by a woman who's fashion designer husband was brutally killed eight years before.

It's a fine episode, I watched one of the later ones earlier in the day, I couldn't get through it, I returned to this one, and the magic is definitely here, the chemistry between the four is evident, and quite addictive.

I'm not sure what other reviewers are missing, but Hannah Waterman certainly does appear, in the clothes shopping scene.

It's a good story, has some great characters, it's amusing (Brian's coat,) and boasts a cracking, dramatic ending.

It has some wonderfully kitsch elements, the fashion show is great and Gerry's entrance is fun. Gerry's clothes are great :-)

Ways great to see the wonderful Rupert Graves in anything. The ever beautiful Anna Louise Plowman has never failed to impress, she is just fabulous.

8/10.

A fashionable way to die
TheLittleSongbird7 February 2018
Have always been a big fan of detective/mystery shows from a fairly young age, well since starting secondary school.

'Inspector Morse', 'A Touch of Frost', 'Midsomer Murders' (in its prime), 'Law and Order', 'Inspector George Gently', 'Criminal Minds', 'Murder She Wrote', you name them to name a few. 'New Tricks' has also been a favourite from the start (despite not being the same without the original cast in recent years). Although it can be corny at times (in an endearing sort of way) it has always been perfect for helping me relax in the evenings. Something that was needed during all the hard times endured in school.

"Fashion Victim" is a very good episode if not among one of my favourites from 'New Tricks'. Not because there is much wrong with it, other than that some ideas in the story are not much new and some of Gerry's dialogue is corny, but more to do with that it just lacks the extra something the best episodes have.

The case still compels though with plenty of entertainment and intrigue if not many surprises, apart from the denouement and its outcome (more gruesome and tragic than your average 'New Tricks' episode).

Visually, "Fashion Victim" is slick and stylish as ever. The music is a good fit and the theme song (sung with gusto by none other by Dennis Waterman himself) is one of the catchiest for any detective/mystery show and of any show in the past fifteen years or so.

Writing is intelligent, thought-provoking and classy, while also being very funny and high up in the entertainment value. This is all mixed adeptly with a seriousness without being overly so that it doesn't feel like 'New Tricks'.

A huge part of 'New Tricks' appeal is the chemistry between the four leads and their performances. The chemistry is so easy going and charming with a little tension.

One of the show's biggest delights is Alun Armstrong, achieves a perfect balance of funny comic timing and touching pathos which was maintained all the way up to his final episode. It is also lovely here to see his role in the team and skills appreciated more all the time. James Bolam's Jack is the quietest, most sensible (mostly) and most composed of the team, with a tragic personal life that Bolam portrays very touchingly without any overwrought-ness.

The only woman on the team, Amanda Redman more than holds her own in what is essentially the boss role of the four. Dennis Waterman brings some nice levity without unbalancing things.

Belinda Stewart-Wilson and Rupert Graves are very good in support.

Overall, impressive and well done episode as to expected if just falling short of greatness. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Hannah invisible?
akicork4 April 2019
Not only does her name appear in the opening and closing credits, I can see Hannah Waterman in the gents outfitters scene, helping her dad to rebrand himself by buying some new clothes. In some scenes the makeup of the Sarah Levene character makes her look very similar to the Emily character - that may be why confusion has arisen.

Fashion Victims

I agree Watermans daughter did not actually make an appearance in the 'Fashion Victims' episode, but her name did appear in the opening and closing credits. Just a general asides - I most liked these four original cast members. Imho, they seemed to gel and play off each other the best - just saying. I'm not so keen on the later series.

Hard to remember this episode's story, wasn't that interesting
scsaxe2 May 2022
As the title says, I don't remember this episode very well, even after rewatching it once specifically to follow the story closely. So, obviously wasn't that interesting for me. Most elements work o.k. From what I remember, character interactions and such, so ends up as a below average episode of the show.
