His family and friends do, in fact, assemble around him and hilarity ensues - with some familial bickering.
As the group interacts with Paul, things begin to change. His estranged mother and father get closer as do Paul and his ex-lover. Paul's ex-, Brad, has a bi-sexual lover (Ted) and Paul's sister (Stephanie) hits on him without success for the moment.
It seems that Paul had made a donation to the clinic of the doctor (Burt) who gave him the diagnosis to encourage this false diagnosis. Burt's father (head of the clinic) finds out about the donation and then figures out that the diagnosis was fake and delivers the truth that Paul is cancer free and there was some "mistake" at the clinic. Of course, we saw this coming so it is little surprise to the viewer.
After the scam is finally revealed, Paul admits to everyone except Brad that the whole thing was an attempt to get back together with Brad. Unfortunately for Paul, Brad is happy with his bi-sexual honey, Ted, so there will be some more flirting required for them to get back together.
Brad's parents seem to be getting along famously and Brad and Paul are found in bed the next morning, too, so everything is looking rosy but the happiness but does not last long. Paul runs off home first thing after waking up.
Then the movie takes a turn into left field with some time spent in an Indian ceremony with "Earth" leading the chanting, acid dropping and additional flirting between all of the participants. The scene gets embarrassing until Paul blurts out that he does not have cancer. But everyone is so high that it is hardly noticed. The scene dissolves into the next morning and we find that most of the participants have paired off and spent the night together. And for some reason, Paul had his hair cut off during the acid trip. "Earth" is still high and finally goes home.
After bi- Ted spends the night with Stepanie, Brad breaks off their relationship and then is ready to recommit to Paul but gets put off for a few days although Paul admits that he has really enjoyed two nights with Brad. Paul is beset with guilt, which is the reason for the delay.
But then Brad finds out the truth about the diagnosis, but is not told why it was done and is very upset and wants nothing further to do with Paul and his cancer scam. His sister also leaves him and his parents can't believe the miraculous "cure" thinking that it is real so they hang in there.
Paul decides that since he can't go back to his workplace and has lost Brad, he will work at the clinic. Six weeks later, we find Paul in scrubs and Ted and Brad back together and the Brad is having trouble at the advertising agency. So Paul is brought back into the situation cryptically, by Ted. Ted and Paul work from Paul's home to get something going on the stalled campaign. At the big presentation to the client, Paul shows up unannounced and watches the presentation that Brad was unaware was going to be shown. It is a success, of course.
Later on, Brad gets over his mad and shows up at the clinic to chat with Paul. He realized that Paul saved the account and his job. And the relationship seems salvaged, too. They do some heavy kissing in the closet (and more) then Brad leaves as quickly as he arrived.
Another week passes and we find ourselves and everyone else at a celebration and Brad appears again. This time, Brad is in an accepting mood and they start some heavy kissing again along with lots of smiling. The camera pans up, the music swells and the credits roll with everyone living happily ever after, we have to assume.
