Kasi Lemmons, director of Eve's Bayou and Talk to Me, chose a play by poet Langston Hughes as the basis for her new movie. Black Nativity is first and foremost a musical, featuring original pieces of music as well as new arrangements of familiar hymns and carols. Lemmons even co-wrote some of the songs, with Raphael Saadiq producing the music (he shares the "Music by" credit with composer Laura Karpman).
The music is the best thing about Black Nativity. Without the songs it would likely be a far more disappointing movie, as you can see plot lines coming from a mile away. There are a couple times when a character says something that punches you in the gut with its earnestness, but otherwise the story is as ridiculous as it is predictable.
Langston, a fatherless kid from Baltimore played by young Jacob Latimore, is sent to live with grandparents he's never met. »

Jessica Simpson and her family stepped out for Bronx's birthday party in La on Saturday and celebrated with sister Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz's 5-year-old son. Sporting a striped shirt and sunglasses, Jessica was all smiles at the festivities. She and her fiancé, Eric Johnson, brought along both of their little ones, Maxwell and Ace, and her dad, Joe Simpson, was also at the party. In late October, Jessica and Eric enjoyed a triple date in La, joining CaCee Cobb and her husband, Donald Faison, as well as Ashlee and her boyfriend, Evan Ross, for dinner. Jessica wore a formfitting dress for the night out, and she recently opened up about her weight-loss plan. Saying that she feels "more confident" after her second pregnancy, she mentioned Eric's support, saying, "He loves me and always makes me feel beautiful . . . so he's awesome." For Bronx's birthday party, Ashlee held hands with Evan as the couple arrived, »

For one Reagan police brother, the problem was an ex-gang mamber. For the other, it was an ex-girlfriend.
Jamie (Will Estes) and Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) each had concerns in Friday's (Nov. 1) episode of CBS' "Blue Bloods," "Growing Boys," directed by former actor Eric Laneuville ("St. Elsewhere"). Jamie's problem involved a threat to his career, while Danny's posed a mild threat to his marriage.
Shooting hoops with former gang member Tomas (Jeff Lima) in the Juvenile Robbery Intervention Program initiated by Frank (Tom Selleck), Jamie was dismayed to see the youth hassled by some of his earlier comrades. The trouble escalated when Jamie witnessed Tomas being chased by the others, prompting him to give pursuit and yell, "Police!"
The chase ended tragically when one of the potential assailants ran into the path of a car that struck him, causing injuries that left the sudden victim possibly paralyzed from the waist down. »
Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson celebrated Halloween with a triple date in La. The parents of two were joined by Ashlee Simpson and her boyfriend, Evan Ross, as well as Jessica's longtime friend CaCee Cobb and her husband, Donald Faison, for a night out at Mastro's. While none of the couples were wearing costumes, Jessica did look Halloween-appropriate in a formfitting black dress with a matching fur shrug. Jessica recently opened up about her weight-loss plan after giving birth to son Ace four months ago. She said in an interview that she is "more confident" with her progress this time around, adding that because she used Weight Watchers to shed the pounds she gained when she was pregnant with Maxwell, she knew what she was getting into. She added that Eric has been a big source of support, saying, "He loves me and always makes me feel beautiful . . . so he's awesome. »

Made in America is not your average concert documentary. Yes, the 90-minute film featured performances from the likes of Pearl Jam, Skrillex, Run Dmc, the Hives, and more. But it was also a tale of struggle, triumph, achievements, and failures. Giving a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the two-day festival that took place in Philadelphia last year, director Ron Howard and Jay Z shared the stories of the people responsible for the success of the inaugural event.
Here are seven highlights:
1. Nicole Zalewski. This single mother exemplified hard work and resilience. Through her work as the festival’s official food vendor — a »

New Orleans -- As the concert portion of the 2013 Essence Music Festival kicked off on Friday night, The Huffington Post was live on hand to take in one of the country's most important -- and fun -- festivals.
Brandy, whose first album came out almost twenty years ago, kicked things off with awesome renditions of her classics. From some of her earlier hits like "I Wanna Be Down, and "Sittin Up In My Room" to the more recent "Two-Eleven" offerings, Brandy's show did more than just warm up the crowd.
While she clearly has plenty of hits of her own, the highlight of her show was without a doubt the three song medley she did covering her favorite Whitney Houston tunes. No one will ever be able to perform "How Will I Know, »

If a network wants to boost its "Bash," adding Heather Locklear isn't a bad way to go.
The actress, considered a good-luck charm by the late television uber-producer Aaron Spelling -- who cast her in "Dynasty," "T.J. Hooker" and arguably her biggest career success to date, "Melrose Place" -- returns to series work by joining the regular cast of TNT's law drama "Franklin & Bash" when it starts its third season Wednesday, June 19.
She plays the firm's new partner, Rachel King, a hard-charging professional who's more than a bit reminiscent of her "Melrose" character, Amanda Woodward. And that's hardly by coincidence, Locklear tells Zap2it.
"I'm so lucky," she says. "When this came, I was like, 'Oh, this should be fine.' The character was already pretty laid out for me, and I'm just adding what I would do on a daily basis in my acting.
"And though I thought it was going to be easy, »

Previously on Pretty Little Liars, Alison Dilaurentis had a funeral. And another funeral. And another and another and another, and every funeral drew a smaller crowd than the one before it because the longer she was dead, the more apparent it became that the girl was an emotional terrorist. During one of the funerals, the Liars were each invited to add a keepsake to Ali's casket, just little trinkets to honor the most memorable moments of trauma she inflicted upon them. Earrings from the time Ali coerced Aria into destroying her philandering father's office. Ouija Board planchette from when Ali's ghost made herself known to Hanna for the first time. One-by-one the casket gifts appeared above ground, and also a necklace made of Ali's actual human teeth. Ali's casket was like Mary Poppins' carpet bag, is what I am saying. »

A couple of pranksters clowning on Chick-fil-a's homophobia created a Trade in Your Homosexuality for a Free Chicken Sandwich Coupon ("offer only applies to persons currently choosing to be gay"), which they actually managed to redeem at a restaurant for some free food. But then they found out that even the most delicious waffle fries in the world can't cure gayness.
