Nice concept of an inept witchfinder. Unfortunately the writing is infantile with no substance and a string of weak jokes. I might try episode 2 to be sure, but this is poor tv.

First impression

"The Witchfinder", a new comedy series from the BBC. At only 30 minutes long, it is hard to give a proper review, we are after all only just now meeting the characters and establishing the story. For the first reviewer to state that the "writing is infantile with no substance, and a string of weak jokes" is somewhat harsh and unhelpful at this stage of the series. You have only watched 30 minutes, and yet can base a review so definitively. Yes, this episode is not laugh out loud funny, and that might be down to the fact that the episode is too short; perhaps 45 minutes to an hour would be a better length of viewing. But at first viewing, the characters seem good, the setting and costumes are authentic enough, and the acting is sound enough. We are not talking Hollywoodesque here, however I feel that the BBC has done OK with this opening instalment. So I will be looking forward to the second episode, and third, before giving thinking about dismissing this programme as "poor tv". Personally, after this first viewing, I think, and hope, that this will be an enjoyable series.
