This turned out to be the first in a two-part story. Actually it is a one-and-half story as one crime is solved but the other is not. The latter involves Chief of Detectives "Ted Carver" (John Larroquette).
This week's story centers more on the first crime as cops come upon a woman in central park who is sitting at the base of a tree. Her eyes are wide opening and she looks, literally, scared stiff (hence, the title of the episode). She's wearing an old white dress and is an attractive early-20s woman.
She's still in that almost-fetal position when Medical Examiner "Sid" (Robert Joy) gets her on the table. He has to slowly stretch her out so he make the examinations. They come up about empty as there are no signs of a struggle.
Finding out what she died of, and how, is a challenge for the CSI team because this is a really different kind of death for them to figure out. The answer, as you would expect, is bizarre.
Since the CSI folks were stumped, they came back to look for more clues that night at the crime scene in Central Park. Mac hears some noise nearby and goes to investigate. He finds some hooded guy with a shovel and tells him to freeze. He runs and Mac cannot catch up to him. He discovers what the man was burying or digging up - another dead body. It turns to out to be 15 years old but remarkably in tact, more like someone who had only been dead two weeks. One clue leads to another and it comes back to the Chief.
It's an interesting episode. Kudos to the actress who played the scared dead girl. How anyone could keep her eyes that wide open for that long without blinking is amazing.
