Albert Lieven as an atypical investment counselor
3 November 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Death Trap" (1962) is an Edgar Wallace britnoir. Albert Lieven is a major attraction in this one, and so is Barbara Shelley as his less than completely loyal secretary. Lieven, an actor whose work I enjoy, is an investment counselor and one cool customer. The story interweaves several subplots. There is, first of all, Lieven's stepson (Kenneth Cope) who needs funds that Lieven refuses to give him. Consequently, Cope spies on Lieven and those around him looking for an angle he can exploit to pressure Lieven. Then there is Shelley and her friend John Meillon. He worked for Lieven for 6 years but then went to prison after a money indiscretion with the firm. Now released, he's looking for a way to get back at Lieven through blackmail. Bugging Lieven is a third person, and that's Mercy Haystead. Her sister died of an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol 5 weeks earlier; but it came right after withdrawing 7,000 pounds from the bank for investment with Lieven. Haystead suspects foul play, as the money has gone missing.

This is only the setup. Before long there is a murder and the cops get into the act.

I still wondered about a few details after this was wrapped up in 54 minutes, but I have no major complaints. This was a typical entry in a good series. The series occasionally has entries in which it shines. I wouldn't count this story as one of them, but I would say that Lieven and Shelley stand out here.
