Nefarious nephew wants his rich uncle's fortune
21 December 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Clue of the New Pin" is episode 5 of season 1 of the British Edgar Wallace Mystery Theater.

This very good story presents a puzzle. How does a murderer place a key to a locked vault on a table inside, beside a dead man? The photography is much more shadowy and noir in this episode, as is the basic story that involves several murders and a blackmailer to boot.

A very rich uncle has a vault in his home. He's fed up with his grasping nephew and makes a point of writing him out of his will. The uncle has made his fortune in the Far East by underhanded means, and a blackmailer appears. The nephew sees his opportunity.

A capable cast carries the story through smoothly with James Villiers a standout as a journalist. The story flags a bit in the last reel after the murderer and technique have become known.
