As SXSW 2013 was coming to a close, I received an email inviting me to a last-minute sneak peek at the new horror comedy film Vamp U. The only name I recognized on the cast list was Gary Cole, but I decided to give it a shot.

Vamp U follows a handsome, likeable history professor named Wayne Gretzky (Adam Johnson) who, in addition to looking good in scarves, is a centuries-old vampire. His enthusiastic student Tom (Matt Mattson) serves as the exposition fairy to tell us in the prologue that 300 years ago, Wayne fell in love with a beautiful human girl named Mary (Julie Gonzalo) but accidentally killed her in a passionate embrace. Level 33 Entertainment has unveiled the first trailer and poster for Vamp U, the studio's new comedy that puts a collegiate twist on the vampire genre. Adam Johnson stars as Wayne Gretzky (no relation to the hockey player), a college history professor who hides a horrible secret. He is actually an immortal vampire who can't grow his teeth after accidentally killing the love of his life 300 years ago. His life is upended when a new freshman named Chris (Julie Gonzalo) is a dead ringer for his former lover, leading to a torrid affair and Chris inadvertently becoming a vampire herself. Take a look at the new footage and one-sheet from this bloody comedy, also starring Gary Cole and Alexis Knapp.

Vamp U is a new horror comedy from directors Matt Jespersen and Maclain Nelson. The film follows Wayne Gretzky (Adam Jonson), an ancient vampire. He loses his bloodlust after murdering the love of his life, Mary Lipinsky (Julie Gonzalo). But, his bloody desires are renewed on campus, when he meets Chris (Julie Gonzalo). Level 33 Entertainment will send Vamp U into limited theatrical release and VOD February 12, followed by sell-through and rental DVD March 12. The disc will present the movie, which was written and directed by Matt Jespersen and Maclain Nelson and features American Gothic and Office Space’s Gary Cole in a supporting role, in 1.78:1 widescreen with 5.1 Surround sound, accompanied by deleted scenes.

The synopsis is as follows: “Wayne Gretzky [no relation, played by Adam Johnson] is a vampire with fangs that won’t grow. His ‘impotence’ began when he inadvertently killed Mary, the love of his life, 300 years ago. To take his mind off the pain, he teaches college history—who better than a guy who’s been around for centuries? Attempting to regain his full vampire powers, he enlists help from his friend and colleague, Dr. Levine [Cole]. But nothing works…that is, until a new semester brings freshman Chris Keller [Julie Gonzalo]—a dead ringer for his beloved Mary. »
