Storyline

This edition of the March of Time series (Volume 12, Number 11) deals with the growing problem of alcoholism ins the USA. It emphasizes that alcoholics are not bad people but have an addiction which is beyond their control. It shows the work going on at Yale University on alcoholism and addiction and tries to dispel many of the myths that surround the subject. It then turn to a relatively new organization that seems to be having great success in helping alcoholics beat their habit: Alcoholics Anonymous. Using their 12-step programs and having reformed alcoholics act as counselors for those in need of help has worked well. Written by garykmcd

An ad for AA
2 January 2011 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

This short is basically an ad for AA.

While it is notable for being a rare film to address alcoholism in its time, I am surprised that AA is promoted as nearly the only solution.

Further, AA is described as though it is not a religious group. Yet their documents are shown relying on a male "Power" and "God", which can only mean the Christian god (as opposed to G-d, Allah, Buddha, etc.) Additionally, we're shown a meeting that ends in what we're told is the usual way, the Christian Lord's Prayer.

Fortunately, today we know there are non-religious groups that achieve the same success as AA, without the indoctrination.

Another thing that bothered me is a scene in which someone asks whether an alcohol breast-feeding mother will giver her baby a "taste for alcohol" and the man answering says that it's equivalent to 12 drops of vanilla extract in a glass of milk, so "No". While this may be true on average (and it's questioned even today) it would have been a good time to remind pregnant mothers not to drink. A blanket "No" sounds like permission or promotion, and the result is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
