Homaging The Cults, 11 March 2013
Author: Nick-leonardi from USA

Exploitation in 2011 rarely is something completely unique: in recent years, the most obvious, mainstream-friendly revivalists were Robert Rodriguez and, in a way, Quentin Tarantino. But they tend to borrow a lot from past films. "Chillerama" is directed by four different directors, Joe Lynch, Adam Green, Adam Rifkin, and Tim Sullivan: also like the above mentioned directors, they tribute exploitation, rather than re-invent it. Actually, this film is an explicitly two-hour tribute to many of the B-Horror sub genres and their various stereotypical themes/characters/situations.

A group of three friends go on the last night of a b-movie drive-in cinema, while in the meantime, a zombie epidemic is slowly spreading around the parking lot. Meanwhile, the audience watches three films: "Wadzilla", the first, is about a guy who finds out he has only one giant sperm in his testicles, and after taking some experimental medication, he ejaculates a rapidly growing sperm monster; the second one, " I was a Teenage Werebear", is about a teenager who is bitten by a James Dean-esque male and becomes and werebear; the third one is "The Diary Of Anne Frankenstein", in which Hitler is busy creating a Frankenstein monster that exterminates at his command.

The funniest is no doubt the first episode, "Wadzilla", and the main plot of the zombies in the parking lot is also fun and a has a nice romance twist to it. After "Wadzilla", it's hard to keep the same amount of attention throughout the entire anthology film. The other two episodes are for the most part tasteless and annoying, especially Anne Frankenstein, fortunately the shortest of them all. These two episodes go a little too far in parody, becoming progressively heavier as the film runs, especially in the musical moments of the "Werebear" episode. Although all four of the plots of the film are genuinely silly, half of them just don't make sense and are not for the least bit funny.

Chillerama can be a funny experience and a nostalgic one for B-Horror aficionados, but a joke is funny only if it's taken at a certain point: it just becomes tiresome, when you exceed in parodying.
