TV Review: ‘Love’

3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Judd Apatow’s movies tend to run rather long for romantic comedies, but that pales next to the canvas that’s available on “Love,” a 10-part Netflix series that follows the slow-gestating relationship between Gus and Mickey, as well as the assorted oddballs that surround them. Highly specific to L.A., for good and ill, the show revolves around frequently irritating protagonists that will present a challenge to viewers’ rooting interest, but there are enough moments of sheer awkwardness and bawdy humor to make this a series a core audience should be able to like, if not, you know, love.

The first episode of the show, co-created by Apatow, Lesley Arfin and series star Paul Rust, introduces Rust’s Gus, an on-set tutor for the bratty 12-year-old star of a TV series, as he discovers his girlfriend has been cheating on him. Their subsequent breakup lands him in a temporary-living complex known as the Springwood, »

Star Wars: The Force Awakens becomes only the third movie ever to gross $2 billion worldwide

7 February 2016 9:58 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Having become the first release ever to gross $900 million at the North American box office this past Friday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has now achieved another milestone, with the movie crossing the $2 billion mark worldwide today.

It’s only the third time ever that a film has reached the landmark figure, with James Cameron achieving the feat twice with Titanic ($2.187 billion) and Avatar ($2.788 billion). However, it is unlikely that The Force Awakens will have enough left in the tank to knock either of those from their current positions and will surely have to settle for third in the list of the highest-grossing movies of all time, leaving Cameron as the king of the box office world.

It had already taken the crown of the highest-grossing North American release of all time back in early January, and now after fifty days on screens Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the first film in history to pass $900 million at the domestic box office.

“The film’s achievements are truly astounding, and it’s our great honor to relaunch this cinematic galaxy not only for all the devoted decades-long fans but for a new generation who will keep the Star Wars legacy alive for many years to come,” states Disney’s Alan Horn.

Worldwide, The Force Awakens is expected to become only the third film ever to reach $2 billion this Saturday after James Cameron’s Titanic ($2.18 billion) and Avatar ($2.78 billion).

Behind the Scenes: Bradley Rubenstein

3 February 2016 7:12 AM, PST | www.culturecatch.com | See recent CultureCatch news »

This is the fourth of a series of interviews that focus on Local 829's Scenic Artists’ "behind the scenes" talent who sculpt and paint in a variety of ways the sets we see on television, in movies and documentaries, on theater stages, and in the backgrounds of television and internet commercials.

I first met Bradley Rubenstein very early on in my days in the scenic arts, and it was immediately apparent that he was, and still is, respectfully dedicated to his work as a fine artist. I’ve followed his career closely since then, watching his art delving deeper and deeper into the human condition as he distorts and mutates his subjects. Recently, Rubenstein had one of his warped and mangled human forms in an exhibition titled Head that I curated for the Hampden Gallery at Umass Amherst.

The interview below begins just days before the installation of Head. The »

Last week, the producers of Robert Mapplethorpe biopic Mapplethorpe revealed that Girls actress Zosia Mamet will portray the late photographer's close friend Patti Smith in the film. She will not be the first actress to play the punk singer onscreen, though, as actress Mickey Sumner played Smith in the 2013 film Cbgb – and Saturday Night Live star Gilda Radner hilariously spoofed her in 1979, a few months before the Patti Smith Group put out Wave.
