Rodrigo Santoro Helps Take Latinos Into the Mainstream (Exclusive)

Rio De Janeiro — One of Latin America’s highest-profile actors in Hollywood and beyond, Brazil’s Rodrigo Santoro, a memorable Xerxes in “30,” has hardly stopped.

But the parts he’s played of late not only underscore the illustrious thesping company he keeps, but just how far Latinos have come in sloughing off Latino type-casting.

Santoro wrapped two weeks ago his first TV series, playing an outlaw on the pilot for HBO’s “Westworld,” helmed by Jonathan Nolan for Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV, and a series inspired in concept by the Yul Brynner movie classic.

He features in Steven Bernstein’s “brilliantly written” “Dominion,” produced by Richard Gladstein, with Rhys Ifans as Welsh bard Dylan Thomas, living out his last day on earth, and John Malkovich as his doctor, shot over the summer in Montreal. Lirio Ferreira’s “Blue Blood” Tops Rio Festival

Rio De Janeiro — Lirio Ferreira’s “Blue Blood,” the story of a circus performer’s attempted reconciliation with his family past, topped the 2014 Rio de Janeiro Intl. Film Festival, winning three Redentor Prizes: Best film, director and supporting actor (Romulo Braga).

Top plaudits in the Rio Fest’s centerpiece Premiere Brasil panoarama rep vindication for Ferreira, who has made just three fiction features in 17 years, his previous movie, “Dry Movie,” dating from 2005.

Set up at Drama Filmes, and produced by producer-director-screenwriter Renato Ciasca, a longtime associate of Beto Brant, with whom he co-directed “I’d Receive the Worst News From Your Beautiful Lips.”

Chico Teixeira’s “Absence,” a big city coming of age story produced by BossaNovaFilms, won a special jury prize.
