Episode 1.2 of Harry's Law was similar to the first one, but it didn't quite have the same spirit. This time Harry helps an elderly African American woman who is accused of Armed robbery, and Adam defends a group of Chinese citizens who fired their employee for having more than one child. It was good, but it felt like something was missing. Part of that could be attributed to the fact that Jenna (Brittany Snow) is barely even in the episode. Brittany is by far the best actor in the show, and Jenna is the most interesting character next to Harriet. It's sad they didn't utilize her more in this episode. However, when she was it in it, she was way too cute. Also, the one-child storyline was weird, and I really didn't get into it. It was still good, just not great.

Wonderful to see Kathy Bates on a regular basis. There are many courtroom dramas but this setting is a bit unusual. The scripts are written from a different point of view and in a different local than all the others. It is a bit preachy and not quite enough drama which the talented cast could handle. Nice to see a diverse cast but I was very disappointed when I tried to find the name of the African American who played the elderly woman who robbed the store. She had more lines than some of the others that were credited..so where is she? This series is definitely worth the watch. The stories are interesting, the humor welcome, the acting excellent and now they need to add better lighting, more drama, and some re-occurring interesting characters and much much more character development. I want to know more of their private lives, the background stories and some locals other than the office and the courtroom.

The real acting kudos go here to Irma P. Hall as an 87 year old cantankerous senior forced by poverty to hold up a liquor store at gunpoint. The traditional liberal arguments are given for her acquittal. The prosecuting attorney and I are amazed when this occurs. What kind of message are we sending out there? Remember the 1979 film "Going in Style," when 3 bored senior citizens rob a bank?
In the 2nd situation, an Asian laundry owner thinks he is back in China and tries to fire an employee who is having her 2nd child. In China the rule is only 1 to a family. Excuse me, we're in America now as in the good old USA. An obnoxious attorney for the fired woman has the name of Thomas Jefferson, but he certainly does have the qualities of that true patriot. He is a loud-mouthed, self-centered individual thinking of himself.
Bates is phenomenal here as she uses common sense tactics to sway a jury. You don't have to agree with her, but you can certainly respect her.
