Decent effects but a bit too episodic
14 February 2011 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Now that we have got to the third episode it seems clear that this series will be episodic in nature with only a small time given over to the background plot arcs involving the ACs and the recently arrived Julius Berger. In this episode the people of Forthaven are expecting the final whiteout of the season but papers written by a scientist before he died on the transport ship suggest that a huge storm is approaching. Of course they don't say this explicitly, they are in the form of equations that will require young mathematical genius Tipper Malone to decipher. While he is working on that Fleur goes out to return the baby to the ACs and a team are sent out to retrieve the communications mast so it won't be destroyed.

While I'm still enjoying the series it isn't quite as good as I'd hoped as each episode contains a story that is neatly wrapped up by the end; I think it would have been better if we were left in doubt over the fate of people caught out in the storm until the next episode. I still hold out hope that things will pick up when the background plot arcs come to the fore. As Julius rises to a higher position in the colony it seems certain that there will be a confrontation between him and Tate. The special effects were pretty good for BBC sci-fi although any faults could have been hidden by the use of 'shaky-cam'!
