2016’s films ranked

This ranking includes only new theatrical releases viewed for the awards year of 2016 (for eligibility for the Academy Awards and the Ofcs and Awfj awards); some films released in the UK without Us releases (and so ineligible for those awards this year) may also be included, for my own bookkeeping purposes. Links go to my review. Numbers after each entry are Date First Viewed/NYC Release Date/London Release Date; year is 2016 unless otherwise noted.

01.03.17: This ranking is not quite final; I will continue to add films and links to reviews through the awards season that ends with the Oscars ceremony on February 26th.

Anna Kendrick Wanted as Santa Claus in Disney Christmas Comedy

11 January 2017 3:15 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Disney has had a truly staggering amount of success over the last year at the box office and interestingly enough, a lot of that still has to do with their original movies. Despite having massive franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars, their original movies like Zootopia still do very well. So, why not do an original Christmas movie with Anna Kendrick? It looks like that may be the plan and what's more is that the 31-year-old actress would actually be playing Santa Claus.

According to a report from Variety, Disney is eyeing Anna Kendrick for a currently Untitled Disney Female Santa Claus Movie that would see her taking on the role of St. Nick. The movie has a working title of Nicole, which seems fitting based on the description, but that title hasn't been finalized. Here is how Variety is describing the movie.

2017 Razzies Nominate Batman v Superman, Assassin's Creed as Worst of the Year

8 January 2017 2:00 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The Golden Globe awards are airing tonight on NBC, which in essence kicks off the annual awards season race celebrating the year's best movies. There is also another awards ceremony that hands out awards to the year's "worst" movies, the Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies. While we'll likely have to wait a short while for the full nominations to be unveiled, the 2017 Razzies short list has been unveiled, and it seems that Warner Bros.' blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has found itself in almost every category.

The nominations short list was unveiled by a YouTube user dubbed "truthhopelove," who took a video showing an email he received which features the 2017 Razzie nominations short list. The email reveals that voting will close on January 16, although the nominations won't be released until a few days later. Traditionally, the Razzie nominations come one day before the Oscar nominations are announced, »

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Leads The Razzie Nominations Shortlist

7 January 2017 12:46 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

As we head into the thick of awards season, it’s time to celebrate all the incredible films that 2016 brought us. La La Land, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, Deadpool and Arrival will no doubt find themselves on the lips of many moviegoers over the next few weeks, while talent like Amy Adams, Casey Affleck, Emma Stone, Adam Driver and Denzel Washington, among others, will also start picking up some serious buzz.

But, as the best of the best start to take up most of the spotlight, there’s another another awards ceremony gearing up to get underway, and it’ll be celebrating very different types of movies and actors/actresses. We are, of course, referring to the Razzie Awards, which shine a light on the worst that the year had to offer. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams Team for Game Night

7 January 2017 10:55 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Jason Bateman is coming off his starring turn in the holiday laugh-fest Christmas Office Party. And he's wasting no time jumping right into another high-concept comedy with Game Night. The movie will team him with Rachel McAdams.

The story revolves around a group of couples whose regularly planned game night goes murderously off the rails. Jason Bateman is officially signed to take the lead, with McAdams currently said to be in negotiations. The screenplay arrives from the power duo of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. They will be directing the movie as well.

Jason Bateman will produce Game Night through his Aggregate Films banner alongside partner James Garavente. John Davis and John Fox are producing the movie for Davis Entertainment. It is stated by The Hollywood Reporter that while Bateman only recently signed on, Aggregate has been attached to the project from the get-go, agreeing to produce since the pitch was made. »

‘Office Christmas Party’s’ Rob Corddry Reflects on His Early Career

6 January 2017 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Before he was a “Daily Show” correspondent (from 2002 to 2006), or created the world of “Childrens Hospital” (starting in 2008), or took a dip in “Hot Tub Time Machine” (in 2010), Rob Corddry appeared in “The Manchurian Candidate,” an Off Broadway production (or, as Corddry remembers it, “more like Way, Way Off Broadway”) directed by John Lahr. The show was reviewed by Variety on July 18, 1994. Although he is listed in the cast, Corddry was not singled out in the review. The production from Art & Work Ensemble was panned, but Corddry survived and has enjoyed a varied career as an actor, writer, and producer ever since. After starring in Paramount’s “Office Christmas Party,” his upcoming projects include the crime thriller “Shimmer Lake” and two comedies: “The Layover,” directed by William H. Macy, and Ken Marino’s “How to Be a Latin Lover.”

Do you remember much about “The Manchurian Candidate”?

Rachel McAdams & Jason Bateman Will Have A Wild ‘Game Night’

4 January 2017 1:03 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

There’s a pretty dull formula for comedies developing around Hollywood that sees creatives cherry picking an innocuous event (“Office Christmas Party“), adding a thin plot and some raunch, and calling it a movie (see also: “Date Night“). And now another one is coming with “Game Night.” Sigh.

Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams will cash easy paychecks for this one, which is being dreamed up by writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (“Vacation,” “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone”) with the story centering around, you guessed it, the wild shenanigans of one game night, and what happens when things go off course when a variety of couples are brought together for their regular hang.

Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman to star in New Line comedy Game Night

4 January 2017 11:20 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Rachel McAdams (Doctor Strange) is in negotiations to join Jason Bateman (Zootopia) in New Line Cinema’s upcoming Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley-directed comedy Game Night.

The project, which is being produced by Bateman and James Garavente through their production company Aggregate Films and John Davis and John Fox through Davis Entertainment, centers around “a group of couples who gather for their regularly planned game night when something goes murderously wrong.”

Bateman has been attached to the project for a few months now as a producer, but only recently signed on to star.

The film sounds like it could be a great ensemble comedy, and it surely will line up a talented cast in the weeks to come. Bateman is coming off of Office Christmas Party, which was largely panned by critics despite its adept ensemble, so hopefully Game Night delivers where that movie wasn’t able to. »

Rachel McAdams And Jason Bateman To Participate In Game Night For New Line

4 January 2017 9:31 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Doctor Strange star Rachel McAdams has entered negotiations to participate in Game Night, a New Line comedy to be helmed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

Nothing is concrete just yet, but we understand that McAdams is poised to join Jason Bateman for a light-hearted romp involving a group of like-minded couples who regularly earmark one night on the calendar for Game Night. Drinks, laughs, and general revelry ensue, but their cherished tradition takes a turn for the worse when something goes murderously wrong. No further details were given regarding the story or McAdams and Bateman’s respective roles in it, but we assume the pair are set to play one couple caught up in the domestic chaos.

Dana Fox and Mark Perez hatched the original screenplay, before Goldstein and Daley, who enjoyed success through 2015’s Vacation reboot, produced a final draft for Game Night. It’s been teetering »

Rogue One Dominates the New Year's Box Office with $49M

2 January 2017 11:09 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

With no new movies opening in wide release during the final few days of 2016, many were not expecting a huge weekend turnout, or even a close race between the top 10 holdovers. It's fitting that the unpredictable year that was 2016 went out with a bang, as six of the top 10 movies posted increases from last weekend. Although the box office winner was no surprise, as Rogue One took the top spot with an estimated $49.5 million over the three-day weekend, and $64.3 million over the four-day holiday weekend. This tally brings Rogue One up to $439.7 million, just $46.5 million shy of becoming 2016's top-grossing movie, a title currently held by Finding Dory ($486.2 million).

Box Office Mojo reports that Rogue One's three-day gross of $49.5 million represents just a 22.6% drop from last weekend, but when the four-day total of $64.3 million is taken into account, it actually increased 0.5% from its previous frame. Rogue One has currently »
