Aff 2014 Dispatch: Richard Lagravenese and 'The Last 5 Years'

26 October 2014 11:00 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

My friend and I attended the Austin Film Festival's opening night screening of musical The Last 5 Years, starring Anna Kendrick (Up In the Air, Pitch Perfect) and Jeremy Jordan (a Corpus Christi native who's been in Joyful Noise and Smash). My heart was in my throat as soon as Kendrick's Cathy started singing, and this twisty story kept my emotions on edge from then on. Jamie (Jordan) and Cathy sing monologues about the current state of their relationship; her songs move backward in time as his move forward (which seems obvious after the fact, but I didn't note this at the time). They only sing together in the proposal scene.

Director Richard Lagravenese (who also directed the less-extraordinary Beautiful Creatures, which the same friend viewed with me) warned the audience before the film that The Last 5 Years is practically all song. The movie contains very little dialogue -- »

Katy Perry is on the receiving end of a lawsuit in which a group of Christian rappers are arguing that she stole their music for her hit song “Dark Horse.”

Katy Perry Sued

Grammy-nominated rapper Flame (Marcus Gray), Chike Ojukwu, Emanuel Lambert and Grammy-winning rapper LeCrae Moore filed a lawsuit against Perry and Capitol Records in St. Louis federal court Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. The group of musicians claims that Perry’s "Dark Horse" rips off their 2008 song “Joyful Noise.”

In addition to Perry, Juicy J and producers Dr. Luke and Max Martin are named in the suit as well as a number of other associates that the suing party believes “infringed the copyright" of “Joyful Noise.” The suit argues that they “exploited and profited” from the use of their Christian rap song with "Dark Horse."

Box Office Predictions: '300: Rise of an Empire' Takes on 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman'

6 March 2014 7:56 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

You've got to like the fierce competition at the top of the box office this weekend, in fact I'm going against tracking and taking family over slo-mo. Mr. Peabody and Sherman is my champion, and for comparison's sake I like The Croods as a similar March release that burst onto the scene without any sequel legs to support it. I'm going slightly higher than even that film at $45.6 million for the talking dog. People like animals more than cavemen, and at least a million people will wander in thinking the movie is about Brian from "Family Guy". There are no sure things in box office predictions, but I feel good about Mr. Peabody and Sherman over-performing. On the under-performing side would be 300: Rise of Empire. The original made significantly more than this prediction, but that was all the way back in 2007, and the market has the memory of a mid-sized gnat. »
