Fashionable nonsense
1 February 2014 | by (London) – See all my reviews

"Fashionable nonsense" is the title of the book, which exemplifies how Western academics reject any objectivity, and engage in an extreme contextualization to appeal to non-Western cultures. "Who Speak for Islam" is a very good exemplification of that trend. Firstly, Esposito does not ask any questions regarding the validity of his core evidence from surveys. Any community that believe to be under a threat will always try to present itself in the most positive way. Secondly, the author does not engage with various other findings, which overwhelmingly present different picture of reality. According to a huge number of surveys, a majority of Muslims are not only deeply intolerant and fundamentalist, but also they are very anti-Western. (Murray D., 2010, Radical Islam on UK campuses:A Comprehensive List of Extremist Speakers at UK Universities, The Centre for Social Cohesion or Ruud Koopmans, 2013, Fundamentalism and out-group hostility Muslim immigrants and Christian natives in Western Europe, WZB Mitteilungen)
