What is the Us equivalent of Croydon? Us cable network Starz is about to find out, as it's developing a new American remake of Peep Show.
I say 'new' in reference to this entirely charmless Us pilot from 2005 starring The Big Bang Theory's Johnny Galecki. That one made the mistake of not involving the UK series creators, losing the PoV trick and thinking that Mark Corrigan's chief character trait was wearing a tie.
The Starz attempt, promisingly, has pulled in original creators Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong to act as consulting producers on the show. They won't be showrunning it though, that honour goes to Wilfred and Son Of Zorn's Eli Jorne.
Here's what Bain and Armstrong say about the project:
“We are hugely relieved »
Beloved British comedy Peep Show ended its nine-season Channel 4 run in December, but the sitcom will enjoy a second life as an American adaptation. The series' producers agreed to a development deal with Starz to bring Peep Show stateside, Variety reports.
The dark comedy starred comedy team David Mitchell and Robert Webb as roommates/social misfits navigating everyday life. The show was presented in a first-person perspective, with viewers assuming the gaze of either Mitchell's Mark or Webb's Jeremy while the respective comedian provided his dialogue in voiceover.
Today in British comedies being adapted for the U.S.: An American version of “Peep Show,” the nine-season comedic wonder of the U.K.’s Channel 4, is being developed at Starz, Variety has learned.
Series creators Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong will be consulting producers on the project, but showrunning duties will be handled by executive producer Eli Jorne, previously of Starz’s “Blunt Talk,” FX’s “Wilfred,” and co-creator of upcoming Fox comedy “Son of Zorn.”
“We are hugely relieved to hand over the responsibility of coming up with the dark and twisted thoughts of two terrible men to the extremely funny, dark and twisted Eli Jorne,” Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong said jointly in a statement.
“Peep Show,” the half-hour comedy that starred British comedians David Mitchell and Robert Webb and was shot entirely through the first-person perspective of its two protagonists, won two BAFTA Awards and another six nominations over its nine »

“Wilfred” star Dorian Brown and “Sons of Anarchy’s” Tommy Flanagan are also starring with Brown playing a widow who saves her ranch by working with convicts to rehabilitate a herd of wild horses that have wandered onto her property. Flanagan portrays the leader of the convicts, and Stone plays the villain.
The pic is scheduled for release by Sp Releasing and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in October with an initial theatrical opening of at least 30 cities in the United States and a simultaneous VOD day-and-date launch.

The live-action and animated hybrid series landed a straight-to-series order for the 2016-17 season, after being developed off-cycle. Jason Sudeikis will voice the lead character.
Jorne’s departure will not have an impact on “Son of Zorn” production and the show is still on track for the upcoming TV season with insiders telling Variety the project is a hot favorite among Fox execs.
Jorne is exiting over creative differences. He created “Son of Zorn” with his former “Wilfred” co-showrunner Reed Agnew. The duo was originally set as co-showrunners on the series, before Sally McKenna came in when Agnew stepped down as co-showrunner, remaining as an exec producer on the show. For now, McKenna will take on sole showrunner duties and exec produce alongside Agnew, Chris Miller and Phil Lord (“Last Man on Earth”), Seth Cohen and Eric Appel. »
